Treatment centre marketing built around certification

Google will not run a treatment ad without LegitScript certification. The category earned its rules. Two problems recur on provider calls here: certification treated as paperwork rather than the prerequisite that shapes the plan, and nobody looking at who is searching. A large share of enquiries come from a family member, and almost no site is written for that reader.

Marketing does not behave the same way here.

This is a category where the advertising restrictions exist because of real harm done by real operators, and that history shapes everything. Google Ads requires addiction treatment advertisers to hold LegitScript certification before any campaign runs, and the certification examines the business rather than the ad. Meta applies its own restrictions.

Beyond the platform rules there is HIPAA, which constrains what you may do with any information a prospective patient provides, and it interacts badly with the default tracking setup on almost every website. A standard analytics or pixel implementation on a page where somebody submits a treatment enquiry can transmit protected health information to a third party, which is a compliance event rather than a marketing one.

Then there is the reader. A large share of enquiries come from a parent, partner or sibling rather than the person who will enter treatment, and they arrive frightened, at an unpredictable hour, needing to know cost, insurance, timing and what actually happens on arrival. Most provider sites are written for a clinical audience or for the patient, and answer almost none of that.

How your customers actually search.

Family member, urgent, often at night

How to help someone, what to do, will insurance cover it, can they be admitted today. This is a large share of real enquiries and almost nobody writes for it.

Insurance and cost

Specific insurer names, does it cover rehab, what it costs without insurance. The single biggest blocker to an enquiry and usually addressed with one vague sentence.

Location and modality

Inpatient or outpatient, detox, specific substances, near a city. Buying intent and the terms most providers compete for, generally to the exclusion of everything above.

What it is actually like

Daily schedule, what to bring, phone policy, visitation, length of stay. Fear-reducing content that shortens the gap between reading and calling.

How an enquiry becomes a customer.

Different intents take different routes. Serving all of them with one page is the most common structural mistake in this industry.

  • Search, usually urgent and often out of hours, frequently by somebody other than the prospective patient.
  • Insurance and cost checking, which stops most enquiries dead if it is not answered on the page.
  • A phone call rather than a form, because the decision is emotional and immediate. Call handling matters more than any landing page change.
  • Admission depends on availability and verification, which means marketing volume without admission capacity is waste rather than growth.

Search

What goes wrong in search

SEO in detail
  • Nothing written for the family member, who is a large share of the audience and a different reader with different questions.
  • Insurance and cost handled in a single evasive line, which is the exact question that decides whether anyone calls.
  • Analytics and advertising pixels firing on enquiry pages, transmitting information that should never leave the site. This is a compliance exposure before it is an SEO problem.
  • Location pages generated in bulk for cities the facility does not serve, which is both a ranking liability and an ethical one in this category.
  • No content on what treatment is actually like day to day, which is what a frightened reader needs before they will pick up the phone.

Paid

Where paid search wins here

Google Ads in detail
  • LegitScript certification first. Without it there is no campaign, and the process reviews the business rather than the creative.
  • Call-focused campaigns with proper hours coverage, since the enquiry is a phone call at an unpredictable time and an unanswered call is a lost admission.
  • Insurance-specific campaigns, which are high intent and generally underserved.
  • Strict negatives against job seekers, students, court-mandated research and news, which consume a large share of untended budget in this category.

Email

What email is for in this industry

Email automation in detail
  • Family support and education sequences, which serve the reader who is deciding and are genuinely useful rather than promotional.
  • Alumni and aftercare communication, which supports outcomes and is the ethical version of repeat-business marketing here.
  • Referral relationships with clinicians and community organisations, maintained deliberately rather than left to chance.

What the report should lead with.

  • Cost per admission, not cost per lead
  • Call answer rate, in and out of hours
  • Insurance verification completion rate
  • Enquiry to admission conversion by source
  • Certification status, tracked as a live prerequisite rather than an annual task

Why we dropped web design, social and branding

An agency that sells eleven services is often reselling several of them. What we removed, why, and what it costs us in deals we no longer win.

Questions

Questions from this industry.

01 What is LegitScript certification and does a treatment centre need it?
It is a third-party certification Google requires before an addiction treatment provider can advertise, and it reviews the business, its licensing and its practices rather than the ad. If you intend to run Google Ads, you need it, and it takes long enough that it should start before the marketing plan is built around paid traffic.
02 Can a treatment centre use normal analytics and Facebook pixels?
Not without care. Standard implementations can transmit information tied to a treatment enquiry to a third party, and in this category that is protected health information. It needs a deliberate setup that keeps identifiers out of what leaves the site. It is a first-week item here, before any optimisation.
03 Why does so much of this advice talk about phone calls rather than forms?
Because that is what happens. The enquiry is a call, it is often out of hours, and it is often not from the patient. A provider with excellent rankings and an unanswered phone at 2am is losing admissions the marketing already paid for.
04 Should a treatment centre build location pages for cities it has no facility in?
No. In most categories that is a ranking risk. In this one it is also a decision about somebody in crisis reaching a page implying local care that does not exist. They do not get built here, and if that costs the engagement, it costs the engagement.
