HVAC Google Ads

HVAC Google Ads that spend when the weather does

The budget ran out at 2pm on the hottest day of the year, and in October the same budget bought clicks from people looking up thermostat manuals. HVAC ad accounts are rarely short of money. The money is spread evenly across a year that is anything but even.

Three HVAC searches that should never share a campaign

Paid search for a heating and cooling company covers three jobs. They are worth different amounts and they need different landing pages.

  • Breakdown. “ac repair near me”, “no heat emergency”, “furnace won’t ignite”. The caller wants a van today and will ring the first number that answers.
  • Replacement. “new ac unit cost”, “furnace replacement estimate”, “heat pump installers”. The searcher wants a home visit and two or three quotes.
  • Tune-up. “ac tune up special”, “furnace inspection”. A small ticket, booked ahead, and often the start of a maintenance plan.

Put all three in one campaign and Google spends the budget on whichever click is cheapest that day. Split them and you can decide what a replacement estimate is worth to you against a tune-up, and bid that way. The structure is set out in our Google Ads account structure guide.

What goes wrong in an HVAC ad account

A flat daily budget meets a heatwave. Google’s help pages say spend on one day will never exceed 2 times your average daily budget, with the month capped at 30.4 times the daily figure. On the first very hot day that ceiling can be reached while people are still at work. The evening breakdown calls then go to someone else.

The account pays for parts and manuals. “capacitor”, “thermostat wiring diagram”, “hvac technician salary” and “hvac school” all match loosely to repair keywords. Google notes that negative keywords won’t match to close variants. You have to add “capacitor” and “capacitors” both, and keep adding from the search terms report each week.

Ads show to people who are not in your service area. Google can target by where a person is or by a location they have shown interest in. A breakdown campaign should be set to people who are physically in the area. Someone researching a move to your city has no furnace for you to fix.

The format changed and the account did not. Google’s call ads page says all options to create new call ads were removed in February 2026, and existing ones stop showing by February 2027. Breakdown campaigns built on call-only ads need rebuilding as search ads with a call asset.

A tap on the number is counted as a lead. Google can count a click on the phone number, or a call that lasted a set length. Only the second tells you somebody spoke to your office.

Local Services Ads come first for breakdown work

Local Services Ads are the listings with a badge at the very top of the results, and you pay only for leads related to your business, not for clicks. For breakdown searches we set these up before spending on ordinary search ads.

Getting in takes paperwork. Google’s US requirements list licence, insurance and background checks and say screening typically takes three to four weeks, so apply before the season. Your profile then shows the Google Verified badge, which replaced the older Google Guarantee badge.

Position there is partly about how you run the office. Google ranks these ads on your bid, your rating, your number of reviews and your response time, and says missed calls may count against you. Our post on Local Services Ads against Google Ads goes through the choice in more detail.

What a click and a lead cost in heating and cooling

These are LocaliQ’s home services search advertising benchmarks, from 3,211 US campaigns between April 2024 and March 2025.

CategoryClick-through rateCost per clickConversion rateCost per lead
Air conditioning installation and repair6.43%$9.686.56%$127.74
Heating and furnaces5.97%$9.307.48%$129.02
All home services6.37%$7.857.33%$90.92

Read them as a starting point. They are national averages across repair and installation together. A lead in the table is a tracked call or form, so your cost per booked job will be higher. Your own figure moves with your metro, the week of the year, and how fast the office picks up.

We do not state a management price here. Mavix quotes after a free review of the account, and the ads pricing page explains how that is worked out. To test the arithmetic first, put the table’s numbers and your own average ticket into the Google Ads ROI calculator.

The first ninety days, week by week

Week one. You get the search terms the account has paid for, sorted into jobs you want and searches you cannot serve. Call tracking is rebuilt so that only a connected call of a set length counts.

Weeks two to four. Breakdown, replacement and tune-up become separate campaigns with their own budgets and pages. The Local Services application goes in. Negatives are added from the real history.

Weeks five to twelve. Budgets are moved by forecast. We raise the cooling budget before a hot week and pull it back after, by hand or with Google’s seasonality adjustments. Google describes those as ideal for short events of 1 to 7 days, which suits a heatwave and does not suit a whole summer.

Shoulder months. Spend moves to tune-ups and replacement estimates. ENERGY STAR advises homeowners to check the cooling system in the spring and the heating system in the fall, because contractors get busy later. Your ads can say the same thing.

What the report shows an HVAC owner

  • Booked jobs by campaign: breakdown, replacement, tune-up.
  • Cost per booked job, beside the same weeks last year.
  • Calls answered as a share of calls the ads produced, in hours and out of hours.
  • Local Services leads charged, and leads credited back by Google.
  • The share of spend that went on searches you could not serve.

When Google Ads is the wrong first move

If calls already go unanswered on busy afternoons, more calls will not help. Fix the answering, then buy traffic.

If your budget covers fewer than a couple of jobs a month at the costs above, the account will not gather enough calls to learn from. Put that money into your Google Business Profile through HVAC local SEO.

And if you want replacement work next year more than repair work next week, HVAC SEO builds the pages those buyers read. The HVAC marketing page shows how the three fit together, and the Google Ads service page covers how we work on any account.

Questions

Questions owners ask about this

01 What does a Google Ads lead cost for an HVAC company?
LocaliQ measured an average of $127.74 per lead for air conditioning and $129.02 for heating across US campaigns from April 2024 to March 2025. A lead there is a tracked call or form, not a booked job.
02 Should an HVAC company run Local Services Ads or Google Ads?
Set up Local Services Ads first if you hold the licence and insurance Google checks. You pay per lead there. Search ads then cover replacement and tune-up searches, where you want your own landing page.
03 Why does our budget run out early on hot days?
Search volume rises with the temperature and a fixed daily budget does not. Google can spend up to twice the daily budget on a busy day, and a heatwave can still outrun that by lunch.
04 Can we still use call-only ads for AC repair?
Google removed the option to create new call ads in February 2026 and says existing ones stop showing by February 2027. The phone number now goes on a search ad as a call asset.
05 What does Mavix charge to manage HVAC Google Ads?
We quote after a free review of the account and the search terms it has paid for. Ad spend goes to Google on your own card and your own account.
06 How soon will we know if the campaigns work?
Search term and structure changes show in the first month. Judge the result against the same weeks last year, because a cool June and a hot June are different markets.
