Phoenix, AZ

SEO and paid search for Phoenix businesses, from Scottsdale to Surprise

Two in three people in the Phoenix metro live outside the city of Phoenix, in Mesa, Chandler, Scottsdale, Glendale and a dozen other cities. If your site and your profile only say Phoenix, those people are finding someone else. This page covers how the Valley splits, how crowded your trade is, Arizona contractor rules, and how we work with you from Los Angeles.

The Valley in numbers: one big city and a ring of large ones

Phoenix had 1,665,481 residents on 1 July 2025 (Census Bureau, city and town estimates). The metro area, named Phoenix, Mesa and Chandler by the Census Bureau, had 5,228,938 (Census Bureau, metro area estimates). It covers Maricopa and Pinal counties.

Divide one by the other and Phoenix itself holds about 32 percent of the metro. That division is ours. It matters because a Google Business Profile with a Phoenix address is competing for a third of the customers and is far from the rest.

The metro had 114,586 employer establishments in 2023, and 64,569 had fewer than five employees (County Business Patterns). It is the smallest of the six metros we have pages for. Our post on US business counts by market explains what the count leaves out.

Locals divide the metro into the East Valley and the West Valley, with Phoenix and Scottsdale between them. The East Valley is Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Tempe and Queen Creek. The West Valley is Glendale, Peoria, Surprise, Goodyear, Avondale and Buckeye.

Those city names are what people type. A homeowner in Gilbert searches for a roofer in Gilbert, and Google shows roofers near Gilbert. Inside Phoenix the search narrows to areas such as Arcadia, Ahwatukee, North Phoenix and Downtown. Scottsdale behaves as its own market, with its own practices, agents and med spas.

For a business that travels to the customer, the practical question is how far the trucks go. A company based in Mesa can cover the East Valley well and will struggle to show up in Surprise. We set that boundary with you before any local SEO work begins.

Trades that are crowded in Phoenix, by Census count

Trade (Census category)Employer locations, 2023Paid employees
Restaurants and other eating places8,254187,820
Offices of real estate agents and brokers4,76010,041
Legal services2,63215,950
Offices of dentists2,19815,663
Plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors1,73724,735
Landscaping services1,22415,381
Exterminating and pest control services4023,354
Roofing contractors3365,368

Each row comes from the metropolitan area file of County Business Patterns: 2023, which counts locations with paid employees only.

Compare these with larger metros and Phoenix stands out in three places. It has 4,760 real estate offices with staff, more than the Chicago metro (4,252), which has twice as many establishments overall. It has 402 pest control firms, against 243 in Chicago. And its 336 roofing contractors employ 5,368 people, slightly more than the 768 roofing firms in Chicago employ.

So the home and property trades are heavier here than the metro’s size suggests. If you run a roofing company or a pest control business, assume your rivals are large and already advertising. If you are an agent or broker, see the real estate page.

Why Phoenix costs less than the coast, except in home services

Phoenix is the only one of our six cities where pay sits below the national figure. The average weekly wage in the Phoenix metro was $1,557 in the first quarter of 2026, against $1,654 nationally (BLS, Phoenix Area Economic Summary). Lower prices per job leave competitors with less to spend per lead. With fewer businesses overall, that points to cheaper search than Los Angeles or New York. That is our inference and we check it per trade.

Home services are the exception. The same BLS summary shows 182,100 construction jobs in July 2026 out of 2,439,400 nonfarm jobs. That is about 7.5 percent on our division. The same sum for the Los Angeles metro gives about 4 percent (BLS, Los Angeles Area Economic Summary). Roofers, air conditioning firms and landscapers here are many and well staffed.

A rough sense of what a lead needs to be worth is easy to get from the lead generation calculator.

The Arizona contractor rule that reaches into your ads

Arizona licenses contractors through the Registrar of Contractors, and the statute has a narrow exemption. Work of a casual or minor nature with a total price under $1,000 is exempt, unless the job needs a local building permit (Arizona Revised Statutes 32-1121).

The same section covers advertising. A person relying on that exemption who advertises must include the words “not a licensed contractor” in the ad.

For a licensed company this is useful. Your license is a claim an exempt competitor is barred from making, so it should be in your ads, on your site and in your Google Business Profile. We check that your license class matches the services your pages offer. We are not lawyers, and for anything unclear we ask you to confirm with the Registrar.

How we work with a Phoenix business

Mavix has no office in Phoenix, no staff in Arizona and no named Phoenix clients. The work is done remotely from our US office in Los Angeles, and there are no Phoenix results on this page because we have none to publish.

Phoenix is on the same clock as Los Angeles for much of the year, since Arizona does not change its clocks in summer. Calls are easy to book. Between calls you see the work in your own accounts: Search Console, your analytics, your ad account and your profile, all owned by you.

The first step is a free review of your site and the cities you appear in. After it you get a written plan and a quote. The approach is on the SEO page, paid search is on the Google Ads page, and fees are explained on the SEO pricing page.

What to ask any agency before hiring one in Phoenix

  • Ask which Valley cities they would target and which they would leave for later.
  • Ask how they plan for summer. A home service budget that is flat across the year ignores the heat.
  • Ask how your contractor license will be shown, and whether they have read the advertising rule.
  • Ask whether a Scottsdale page and a Glendale page would say different things, and what.
  • Ask who owns the ad account and the profile if you part ways.
  • Ask whether they are based in Arizona, and if they say yes, where.

Our own office is one state west. The Los Angeles page has the address, and the other cities are on the locations page.

Questions

Questions owners ask about this

01 Does Mavix have an office in Phoenix?
No. Mavix has no office, no staff and no named clients in Phoenix or anywhere in Arizona. We work with Phoenix businesses remotely from our US office at 3435 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles.
02 How many businesses are in the Phoenix metro area?
The Census Bureau counted 114,586 employer establishments in the Phoenix, Mesa and Chandler metro area in 2023. Of those, 64,569 had fewer than five employees.
03 Should I target Phoenix or cities like Scottsdale and Mesa?
Target the cities where you do the work. Scottsdale, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert and Glendale are separate cities with their own search results, and the city of Phoenix holds only about a third of the metro population.
04 Can an unlicensed handyman advertise in Arizona?
Arizona law exempts casual or minor work under 1,000 dollars that needs no building permit. A person using that exemption who advertises must include the words not a licensed contractor in the ad.
05 Is Phoenix cheaper to compete in than Los Angeles?
It has far fewer competitors. The Phoenix metro has 114,586 employer establishments against 411,949 in the Los Angeles metro. Home service trades are still hard fought here, so we check your trade before saying anything about cost.
06 How should a seasonal business plan its marketing in Phoenix?
Around your own call history. Air conditioning, pest control and pool work follow the heat, and landscaping and roofing have their own months. We ask for two years of monthly job counts before proposing a budget.
