Law firm marketing statistics for 2026, each with its source

26 US law firm marketing statistics for 2026: lawyer counts, how firms answer new enquiries, review habits and Google Ads costs, each linked to its source.

The US had 1.37 million active lawyers in 2025, the highest count in ten years (ABA Journal). In Clio’s 2024 test of 500 law firms, 33 percent replied to an email enquiry (Clio). A legal search click cost $9.87 in the 2026 benchmarks (LocaliQ).

Those three numbers frame the rest of this page. There are 26 statistics below, grouped by the question each one answers. Every figure was opened at its source and carries its year. Where a source is not specific to law firms, or not specific to the US, the text says so.

The short version

  • The American Bar Association counted 1.37 million active lawyers in the US in 2025, up from 1.35 million in 2024 and up 5.6 percent over ten years.
  • New York had 190,015 active lawyers in 2025, California had 181,048 and Texas had 99,867. The figures are from the ABA’s 2025 Profile of the Legal Profession.
  • The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts 863,700 lawyer jobs in 2025 and projects 5 percent growth from 2025 to 2035.
  • Clio’s 2024 Legal Trends Report emailed 500 law firms as a prospective client, and 33 percent of them replied, down from 40 percent in 2019.
  • BrightLocal’s 2026 survey of 1,002 US adults found that 68 percent require a rating of at least four stars before they use a local business.
  • Legal search ads cost $9.87 a click and $131.63 a lead in LocaliQ’s 2026 benchmarks, the highest of its 23 industries on both measures.

It has 1.37 million active lawyers, and three states hold about a third of them. The table covers the head count, where lawyers are, and what the government projects.

The ABA and the Bureau of Labor Statistics count different things. The ABA counts active lawyers. The BLS counts jobs. Quote one or the other, with its name.

The three state rows add up to 470,930 lawyers. That is about 34 percent of the 1.37 million total, on our arithmetic. The ABA Journal reports that 2025 was the first rise in the head count since 2020.

How do law firms handle a new enquiry?

In the one test we could open, about a third replied to an email and four in ten answered the phone. The figures come from Clio’s 2024 Legal Trends Report.

Clio ran a secret shopper study. Researchers contacted 500 law firms as a prospective client would, by email and by phone (Clio press release, October 7, 2024). The release describes the report’s data as coming from legal professionals across North America. It does not say where the 500 firms were.

Both response figures fell from the 2019 run of the same test. Email replies were 40 percent in 2019, and answered calls were 56 percent. Clio sells software to law firms, so read its report as a vendor’s research. The method is stated, which is why it is here.

How do clients find and choose a local business?

They read reviews, and they read recent ones. We could not open a current survey of how people choose a lawyer. These figures are for local businesses in general.

They come from BrightLocal’s Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, a panel of 1,002 US adults (BrightLocal). The survey does not break results out by industry, so none of these rows is specific to legal services.

What do Google Ads cost for law firms?

A legal search click cost $9.87 in the 2026 benchmarks, and a lead cost $131.63. Both are the highest figures among the 23 industries in LocaliQ’s report.

LocaliQ says the report is built on thousands of its customers’ campaigns on Google Ads and Microsoft Ads. The page we opened does not state the campaign dates. Our post on what Google Ads cost in 2026 records the method note from the WordStream edition.

The category covers every kind of legal service together. The report does not split it by practice area, so it gives no separate figure for injury, family or criminal work. A lead is whatever the account records as a conversion. It is not a signed client. The cost per lead benchmarks post explains that difference.

What does this mean for your marketing?

This section is our reading of the numbers above. It is opinion, and the sources do not say it.

The response figures matter as much as the ad figures. A lead that costs $131.63 on the benchmark is expensive to leave unanswered. In Clio’s test, about half of the firms could not be reached by phone. Before raising a budget, we would call our own number as a stranger and time the reply.

The click price is high and the conversion rate is low. Legal clicks cost about 82 percent more than the all-industry figure, on our arithmetic. They convert at 5.55 percent against 8.18 percent. That puts weight on which searches you pay for and on the page each click lands on.

You can test what an enquiry is worth to your firm in the Google Ads ROI calculator. The comparison of SEO and Google Ads covers when each one fits.

What these figures do not tell you

  • None of them is a result you should expect. They describe a national head count, one test of 500 firms, a survey panel or a set of ad accounts.
  • The Clio figures are from the 2024 edition. We could not open the 2025 report, so we have not quoted it.
  • The review figures are for local businesses of every kind. No row in that table is about legal clients alone.
  • Nothing here is legal advice, and nothing here describes the advertising rules of any state bar.

The bottom line

A statistic is worth quoting when you can say who counted it, when, and what one unit is. For law firms the numbers that pass that test are a bar association count, government job data, one responsiveness test, one consumer survey and one ad benchmark. Use them to size the market and to sanity-check a quote. Your own intake records are the number to plan on.

Questions people ask about this

How many lawyers are there in the US?

The American Bar Association’s 2025 Profile of the Legal Profession counts 1.37 million active lawyers, up from 1.35 million in 2024. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a different measure, 863,700 lawyer jobs in 2025. Name the source when you quote either figure.

Which states have the most lawyers?

New York had 190,015 active lawyers in 2025, California had 181,048 and Texas had 99,867. The figures are from the ABA’s 2025 Profile of the Legal Profession, as reported by the ABA Journal. Together that is about a third of the national total.

How much does a Google Ads click cost for a law firm?

LocaliQ’s 2026 search advertising benchmarks put the Attorneys and Legal Services category at $9.87 a click and $131.63 a lead. Those are benchmark figures across LocaliQ’s customers and across every practice area together. One firm can pay far more or less.

The benchmark report gives the prices and does not give a reason, so we will not guess at one here. What it does show is the size of the gap. Attorneys and Legal Services has the highest click price of the 23 categories in the 2026 report, at $9.87 against $5.42 overall.

Do law firms answer new enquiries quickly?

Many did not in the one test we could open. Clio’s 2024 Legal Trends Report contacted 500 law firms as a prospective client. It found 33 percent replied to email and 40 percent answered the phone, both lower than in 2019.

Is the number of lawyers in the US growing?

Yes, slowly. The ABA count rose 5.6 percent over the ten years to 2025, and 2025 was the first increase since 2020. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 5 percent growth in lawyer employment from 2025 to 2035, with about 28,700 openings a year.

Do online reviews matter for a law firm?

The best current survey we could open is not specific to legal services. BrightLocal’s 2026 survey of 1,002 US adults found 97 percent read reviews for local businesses and 68 percent require at least four stars. Your state bar’s rules on reviews still apply.
