How much does email marketing cost in 2026? Platform prices, agency fees and what moves them

What a US small business pays for email in 2026: platform prices by list size, freelancer and agency fees, and the cost of a flows-first setup.

Email marketing costs a US small business between nothing and about $100 a month for the sending platform, up to 5,000 contacts. Mailchimp Essentials is $13 a month at 500 contacts and $75 at 5,000, in a price breakdown updated on 18 September 2026 (EmailVendorSelection).

The larger bill is the person doing the work. One email agency’s pricing guide, updated 8 September 2026, says retainers “typically start at around $1,000 to $3,000 per month for smaller businesses” (InboxArmy). A survey of buyers gives a much lower figure, and both are below.

The short version

  • A sending platform costs $13 to $20 a month at 500 contacts and $75 to $100 at 5,000 contacts on Mailchimp or Klaviyo, according to published 2025 and 2026 price breakdowns.
  • Brevo bills by emails sent, not by contacts. Its Starter plan is $9 a month for 5,000 emails and $69 a month for 100,000 emails.
  • Freelance email marketers on Upwork typically charge $15 to $40 an hour, based on the marketplace’s own historical contract data.
  • Published agency prices disagree. InboxArmy puts small business retainers at $1,000 to $3,000 a month, while 42 percent of buyers in a WebFX survey reported paying an agency $51 to $500.
  • Building automated flows is usually priced as a project. InboxArmy puts a three-email automation at $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Mavix does not publish a price list. Mavix quotes after a free review of your list, platform and current emails.

How much does an email platform cost by list size?

For a list of 500 to 5,000 contacts, a paid plan on Mailchimp or Klaviyo runs from $13 to $100 a month. The price rises with the number of contacts you store, whether or not you email them.

ContactsMailchimp EssentialsMailchimp StandardKlaviyo Email

2,500$45$60About $60
5,000$75$100$100
10,000$110$135$150
25,000$270$310$400
50,000$385$450$720

Sources: Mailchimp figures from EmailVendorSelection, updated 18 September 2026 (EmailVendorSelection). Klaviyo figures from EmailToolTester, last updated 19 February 2025, so treat them as the older of the two sets (EmailToolTester). All prices are US dollars per month. We used published breakdowns because the vendors’ own pages show promotional and local-currency prices.

The free plans are small. Klaviyo’s own pricing page lists a free plan of up to 250 active profiles and 500 emails a month (Klaviyo). Mailchimp’s pricing page lists a free plan limited to 250 contacts and 500 sends a month (Mailchimp). The EmailVendorSelection breakdown shows the Mailchimp free plan reaching 500 contacts, so the two sources disagree. Trust the vendor page on the day you sign up.

Brevo prices differently. It charges for the emails you send, and its plans are priced by monthly volume.

5,000$9$18
10,000$17$35
20,000$29$65

100,000$69$129

Per-email pricing suits a large list that you email rarely. Take a 5,000-contact list sent four emails a month. That is 20,000 emails, which is $29 on Brevo Starter against $75 on Mailchimp Essentials. Send that list twenty times a month and you are on the 100,000-email tier at $69, so the gap narrows.

What do freelancers and agencies charge for email marketing?

Freelancers typically charge $15 to $40 an hour on Upwork. Agencies publish retainers from a few hundred dollars to several thousand a month. The published figures do not agree, so here they are side by side.

Two things explain the gap between $51 and $3,000. The first is who is answering. InboxArmy describes what a specialist agency asks. The WebFX survey describes what buyers said they pay, and a buyer may count a small package as an agency. The second is scope. A package that sends one newsletter a month is a different job from strategy, copy, design, segmentation and automation.

InboxArmy also prices single emails. It puts the cost of one crafted email at $250 to $1,000, depending on length and quality. That figure is useful for checking a retainer. A $1,500 retainer that delivers four emails a month works out at $375 an email, inside that range.

Freelancer rates need the same care. Upwork’s $15 to $40 covers contracts worldwide. InboxArmy notes that specialist freelancers can charge $250 an hour or more. Our comparison of an agency, a freelancer and an in-house hire sets out how to weigh the three, and the reasoning carries over to email.

What does a flows-first setup cost?

A flows-first setup is usually sold as a one-time project. InboxArmy says the setup of a three-email automation costs “in the range of $1,000 to $5,000”, varying by complexity and scope (InboxArmy).

A flow is a sequence of emails that sends itself when something happens. A welcome series after a signup is one. A reminder after an abandoned cart is another. Flows-first means you build those sequences before you commit to a weekly newsletter.

Three automations at the InboxArmy rate would come to $3,000 to $15,000. That is our arithmetic on one agency’s published range. It is not a quote, and a package of several flows may be priced differently.

The running cost after the build is low. A flow sends only when a customer triggers it, so the platform bill stays at your contact tier. You pay again when you want the flows rewritten or tested.

We recommend flows first for a small business, and that is a Mavix recommendation, not an industry rule. Our email flows checklist lists five flows in the order we build them. The email automation service page describes what a build includes.

What moves the price of email marketing up or down?

Five things move the price. Each one is visible before you sign anything.

List size. On contact-based platforms the bill follows the list. In the table above, Mailchimp Standard goes from $100 at 5,000 contacts to $450 at 50,000. A smaller stored list sits on a lower tier.

How often you send. On Brevo, volume is the bill. On Mailchimp, each plan has a monthly send limit set as a multiple of your contact tier (Mailchimp).

Who writes and designs. Copy and design are labour. At InboxArmy’s $250 to $1,000 an email, eight emails a month cost $2,000 to $8,000. Writing them in-house costs your own hours.

Automation depth. A three-email welcome series is a small project. Flows that branch on order history, or that connect to a store or a CRM, take longer to build and test.

The state of your sending setup. Authentication and list hygiene come before any campaign. Our guide to email sender requirements explains the rules mailbox providers set for bulk senders, with their sources. A neglected setup adds work to a quote.

What should a small business budget in total?

Add the platform to the labour, and budget for the first year, not the first month.

Freelancer$75 to $100 a month$15 to $40 an hour on UpworkStrategy, approvals, cover when they are away

The table uses the Mailchimp and Klaviyo prices from the first section. On Brevo the platform line would be lower for a list you email four times a month.

Cost only matters next to return. Our post on email marketing ROI for a small business shows how to work out your own figure over ninety days. Use it before you agree to a retainer.

For an online store, the flows that follow an order or an abandoned cart are the ones we would build first. Our page for ecommerce and retail businesses covers that case. The email marketing service page and the email pricing page explain how we scope the work. Mavix quotes after a free review.

The bottom line

The platform is the small, published part of the bill. The labour is the large part, and its published prices range from $51 to $10,000 a month because they describe different jobs. Price the job first: how many emails, which flows, who writes them. Then compare quotes for that same job.

Questions people ask about this

How much does email marketing cost per month for a small business?

The platform costs about $13 to $100 a month for a list of 500 to 5,000 contacts on Mailchimp or Klaviyo, according to published price breakdowns. Labour is on top. Freelancers on Upwork typically charge $15 to $40 an hour, and published agency retainers for smaller businesses run from about $300 to $3,000 a month.

Is there a free email marketing platform?

Yes, with tight limits. Klaviyo’s pricing page lists a free plan of up to 250 active profiles and 500 emails a month. Mailchimp’s page lists a free plan of 250 contacts and 500 sends a month. A breakdown by EmailToolTester lists Brevo’s free plan at 300 emails a day. A free plan suits testing more than running a business.

Why do published agency prices for email differ so much?

They measure different things. InboxArmy, an email agency, says retainers start at $1,000 to $3,000 a month for smaller businesses. In a WebFX survey of more than 250 US marketers, 42 percent said they pay an agency $51 to $500 a month. One is an asking price for full management. The other is what buyers report for packages of any size.

How much does it cost to set up automated email flows?

InboxArmy’s pricing guide, updated in September 2026, puts a three-email automation at $1,000 to $5,000 depending on complexity. A set of several flows costs more in total, and the price depends on how each one branches. After the build, the running cost is your normal platform plan.

Is Brevo cheaper than Mailchimp?

It depends on how often you send. Brevo charges by emails sent, at $9 a month for 5,000 emails and $29 for 20,000 on its Starter plan. Mailchimp Essentials charges by contacts, at $75 a month for 5,000. For a 5,000-contact list sent four emails a month, Brevo costs less. Frequent sending raises the Brevo bill.

Should I pay a freelancer by the hour or an agency by the month?

Pay by the hour when the job is bounded, such as building one flow or fixing a template. A monthly retainer fits ongoing work that needs planning, writing, design and reporting together. Ask either one to list the emails and flows you will receive each month, so you can work out the cost of each.

Does a bigger list always cost more?

On contact-based platforms it does. Mailchimp Standard is $100 a month at 5,000 contacts and $450 at 50,000 in the September 2026 breakdown. On Brevo the sending volume is what you pay for. Storing fewer contacts lowers the bill on the first kind of platform.

What does Mavix charge for email marketing?

Mavix does not publish a price list. Mavix quotes after a free review of your list, your platform and the emails you already send. The quote depends on how many flows need building, who writes the copy and how often you plan to send.
