Landscaping local SEO

Local SEO for landscapers, from the map results to the signed contract

Lawn care is bought from the map. Someone types "lawn care near me", sees three names with stars beside them and calls one. If your profile has no photographs of your work and eleven reviews from 2022, the call goes to the firm two streets away.

Which landscaping searches bring up the map

Google shows a map with three businesses when it reads a search as local. In this trade that covers a lot of ground.

  • “Lawn care near me”, “lawn mowing service” and “yard cleanup” plus a town.
  • “Landscapers near me” and “landscaping companies” plus a town.
  • “Sprinkler repair near me” and “sod installation” plus a town.
  • “Snow removal near me”, once the first storm is forecast.
  • “Patio builders” plus a town, where the map sits above the ordinary results.

Maintenance searches are decided almost entirely on the map. Project searches use the map as a shortlist, then the customer opens each website to look at the work. The landscaping page explains why those two buyers differ. This page covers the map and the profile behind it.

How Google ranks the map, in its own words

Google’s help page says local results are “mainly based on relevance, distance” and prominence. It adds that complete and accurate profiles are more likely to show, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help. It also says nobody can pay for a better local position.

For a mowing round, distance works in your favor. The customers you most want are the ones near your existing stops. For design and build, distance works against you, because the suburbs with the largest budgets may be a long drive from the yard.

What goes wrong on a landscaper’s profile

The address is public when nobody visits it. Google’s guidelines say a service-area business should hide its address. A crew yard is not a storefront.

A listing appears in the wealthy suburb. The same guidelines say a rented mailing address you do not operate from is not eligible. Those listings can be removed, and the reviews on them go with them.

Every county in the state is listed. You can add up to 20 service areas, within about two hours of driving. Listing more towns does not move you closer to them.

The photographs are a logo and a truck. The profile is where a customer first sees your work. It should show finished patios, planted beds and striped lawns.

The services are out of season. If you plow in winter, add it before the snow. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that grounds firms sometimes provide snow removal in the winter months. A profile that lists only mowing gives Google nothing to match in January.

No license shown for treatments. The same BLS page says most states require a license to apply pesticides. If you sell weed control or grub treatment, put the license number in the profile and on the site. California also requires a contractor’s license number in all forms of advertising.

The work, month by month

Month one. The profile is rebuilt: name, phone number, primary category, the full services list and honest service areas. Duplicate listings are found and merged or closed. A tracked number is added so calls from the profile can be counted. The local SEO checklist lists every item.

Month two. Photographs go up, sorted by project type, and a routine is set to add new ones each month. Review requests start. Google suggests sharing a link or a QR code and replying to what comes in, and states that incentives for reviews are strictly prohibited. The review generation guide has the message we send.

Month three. Directory and association listings are checked so the name and phone number match everywhere.

Each season after that. Services, hours and photographs are updated before demand turns. Pages for the suburbs you want are written and linked from the site.

What it costs and what moves the cost

Google does not charge for the profile. The work is priced by its size, and three things set that. How many genuine locations you have, how far behind your review count is, and how many old listings need correcting.

To value a call, one published figure helps. LocaliQ puts a paid search lead for landscaping at $117.92 on average, from US campaigns between April 2024 and March 2025. A call from the map has no charge attached. The lead generation calculator shows how many calls a target needs. Mavix quotes after a free review and does not publish a trade price.

How it is measured

  • Calls from the profile on their own number, by month and against the same month last year.
  • Maintenance contracts signed from those calls.
  • Project enquiries where the customer says they found you on the map.
  • Reviews gained, and how many name the kind of job.
  • Views of the profile’s photographs, from the profile report.

When local SEO is the wrong first move

If nearly all your work is large design and build, the website and its project pages matter more than the map. Begin there.

If the season starts next month and the profile has few reviews, the map will not catch up in time. Google Ads for landscapers can fill the gap.

If you have no base in the area you want to grow in, a profile cannot be placed there. The method in full is on the local SEO service page.

Questions

Questions owners ask about this

01 How do landscapers get into the map results?
Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. For a landscaper that means a complete profile with every service listed, a real base near the customer, and a steady flow of recent reviews.
02 We want projects in a suburb forty minutes away. Can the map get us there?
Rarely on its own, because distance is measured from your base. Add the suburb as a service area, then build a page on your site about your work there. That page can rank in the ordinary results under the map.
03 Should a landscaper show an address on the profile?
Only if customers come to it, such as a nursery or a showroom. If crews leave from a yard and customers never visit, Google asks you to hide the address and list service areas instead.
04 When is the right time to ask a landscaping customer for a review?
For a project, on the day it is finished and photographed. For a maintenance plan, after the first month, once the customer has seen the standard held. Ask everyone, and never offer anything in return.
05 Do photographs on the profile matter?
They matter a great deal in this trade. A customer choosing between three landscapers on the map looks at the pictures first. Add finished projects each month and label what the job was.
06 What does local SEO cost for a landscaping company?
Google charges nothing for the profile. Mavix quotes for the work after a free review of the profile, the reviews and the directory listings that carry your name and number.
