SEO and paid search for Austin businesses in a market that keeps moving north

New competitors open every month and the suburbs you ignored two years ago are now cities. Your rankings were built for an Austin that was smaller and closer to downtown than the one searching today.

Austin passed one million residents in 2025

Austin had 1,002,632 residents on July 1, 2025. The Census Bureau noted that it crossed the million mark between 2024 and 2025, joining eleven other US cities (Census Bureau). The Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos metro had 2,620,945 and added 53,796 people in a year (Census Bureau).

The business base is growing with it. There were 66,280 employer establishments in the metro in 2023, with 1,042,004 paid employees (County Business Patterns). Of those, 38,025 had fewer than five employees. Small firms are 57 percent of the count on our arithmetic.

A growing market cuts both ways. More people search each year. More firms also open each year to answer them, and a ranking you held in 2023 is being contested by businesses that did not exist then.

Where Austin searchers say they are

In the city, people name the neighbourhood: South Congress, East Austin, Mueller, Zilker, Hyde Park, the Domain and Circle C. Outside it, they name the town, and the towns along Interstate 35 and US 183 have grown fast.

Figures are from the Census Bureau’s city and town estimates. The 2020 column is the July 2020 estimate. Georgetown, Leander and Kyle each grew by about half in five years, on our arithmetic.

That growth matters for a service business. A plumber who set a service area in 2020 drew it around a smaller region. Google ranks local results partly on distance from the searcher (Google Business Profile Help). Much of the growth in that table is in Williamson County, and an address in south Austin is a long way from it. The seven steps to the map pack in Texas cover how to check your own reach.

Professional services lead Austin employment

The metro had 1,421,700 nonfarm jobs in July 2026 (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Professional and business services was the largest group at 294,600, about a fifth of all jobs on our arithmetic. Government employed 201,000, which reflects the state capital and the university. Manufacturing employed 87,000 and information 48,500.

Construction is the group moving fastest. Mining, logging and construction reached 99,100 jobs, up 5.5 percent in a year, on the same summary.

Two kinds of business follow from that. The first sells to other companies, where a buyer researches for weeks before a call. Our SaaS marketing and managed IT services pages cover that sale. The second serves new households: builders, trades and agents. See real estate marketing for that side.

Why competing in Austin costs more than the size suggests

Austin is the smallest of the big Texas metros and, in our reading, the most contested per resident. The metro has about 26.5 employer establishments per 1,000 residents, on our arithmetic from the Census figures. San Antonio has about 19 and Dallas-Fort Worth about 23.

Wages add to it. The average weekly wage in the Austin area was $1,957 in early 2026, against $1,654 nationally, on the BLS summary above. Where pay is higher a new customer is worth more, and firms will pay more to reach one.

No source publishes a click price for Austin itself. For a starting point, the national 2026 benchmark for business services is $5.87 a click and $93.69 a lead (LocaliQ). Your own figure is in Keyword Planner, set to Travis and Williamson counties.

There is one more local factor, and it is our opinion. A city full of software and marketing staff has more businesses that know how search works. Expect competitors whose sites are already technically sound.

State rules an Austin business should know

Texas does not license every trade, and the ones it does are split between agencies. Air conditioning and heating contractors are licensed by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Plumbers answer to the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners. Our post on Local Services Ads and Google Ads for Texas trades sets out which licence Google checks.

Software and data companies should read the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act, in force since July 1, 2024. It covers companies that do business in Texas or sell to Texas residents and process personal data (Texas Attorney General). Small businesses as the federal Small Business Administration defines them are generally exempt, apart from sales of sensitive data. A funded company may have outgrown that exemption.

Working with us from Austin

We are based in Los Angeles, and that is our only US office. There is no Mavix office in Austin, nobody on our team lives there, and we have no named Austin clients. You would work with us remotely from the first call.

In practice you send the site and get a written review back. It shows which searches already reach you, which pages a buyer would expect and cannot find, and whether enquiries are being counted. If the site has technical faults, technical SEO comes before new pages. Ongoing SEO is measured against a baseline taken in your own Search Console. Google Ads runs on your own card.

The same arrangement applies in San Antonio and the other cities on our locations page.

Questions to put to any Austin agency

  • Ask how they would handle Round Rock and Georgetown: one page each, or none until the data shows searches.
  • Ask what they would fix in the first 30 days, in order.
  • Ask how they separate searches for your brand name from searches by strangers.
  • For a software company, ask for an example where the sale took months and how they tracked it.
  • Ask where their staff are. A local office is useful only if the people doing the work sit in it.

Questions

Questions owners ask about this

01 Does Mavix have an Austin office?
No. The only Mavix office in the United States is in Los Angeles. We have no staff in Austin and no named Austin clients. The work is done by video call and through accounts you own.
02 How large is Austin now?
Austin had 1,002,632 residents on July 1, 2025, according to the Census Bureau. The Austin-Round Rock-San Marcos metro had 2,620,945, after adding 53,796 people in a year.
03 Why are Austin suburbs worth their own pages?
Because several have grown into separate search markets. Georgetown went from 68,725 residents in 2020 to 106,907 in 2025 on Census estimates. A page earns its place there if you do real work in the town.
04 Is SEO or Google Ads the better start for an Austin software company?
It depends on whether buyers already search for what you sell. If they do, ads test the demand in weeks and SEO builds on what converts. If they do not, neither will create the search.
05 Does Texas privacy law apply to a small Austin business?
The Texas Attorney General says small businesses under the federal definition are generally exempt from the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act. The exception is selling sensitive data. Read the state page before adding tracking.
06 How is the price for Austin SEO work decided?
By what the site already has and what it needs. We publish the factors and no figure. The number comes in writing after the free review.
