How much does local SEO cost in 2026 for a single-location business?
Local SEO averages $1,557 a month in the largest named survey, and many agencies charge under $1,000. What the fee covers and what you can do yourself.
Local SEO costs $1,557 a month on average, according to the largest named survey of SEO prices. Ahrefs polled 439 SEO providers and found agencies average $1,819 a month for local work and freelancers $1,150 (Ahrefs). A second survey points lower. SE Ranking and Duda found 64 percent of the agencies they asked charge under $1,000 a month (SE Ranking).
On those figures, a single-location or service-area business can expect quotes from a few hundred dollars to about $2,000 a month. Some of the work is a one-off, and some of it you can do yourself for nothing. This post covers local SEO only. For SEO in general, see how much SEO costs.
The short version
- Local SEO averages $1,557 a month in Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers, with agencies at $1,819 and freelancers at $1,150. Ahrefs last updated that page in August 2024.
- SE Ranking and Duda’s survey of 260 agencies, published in December 2024, found 64 percent charge under $1,000 a month and 30 percent charge under $500.
- Two local SEO software companies publish managed service prices: $499 and $1,999 a month at Whitespark, and $1,299 a month at BrightLocal.
- A Google Business Profile is free to create and manage, and Google says there is no way to pay for a better local ranking.
- Listings on directories are a one-off job. BrightLocal prices them from $2 to $3.20 per site.
- Mavix does not publish a local SEO price. Mavix quotes after a free review of the site and the profile.
What does local SEO cost per month in 2026?
The published figures run from under $500 to about $2,000 a month for one location. No source we found measures US local SEO prices in 2026 directly, so the table shows the four closest named sources and what each one is.
| Source | What it is | Monthly figure |
|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs | Survey of 439 SEO providers worldwide, last updated August 15, 2024 | Local SEO averages $1,557. Agencies $1,819, freelancers $1,150 |
| SE Ranking with Duda | Survey of 260 agencies, published December 13, 2024. 94 percent serve small or local businesses | 64 percent charge under $1,000. 30 percent under $500. 20 percent charge $1,000 to $2,000 |
| BrightLocal | One company’s public price for a managed local SEO service, read in October 2026 | $1,299 |
| Whitespark | One company’s public prices, read in October 2026 | $499 for Google Business Profile management. $1,999 with website work added |
Three notes on reading it.
The Ahrefs averages are upper estimates. Ahrefs says it assumed every provider charges the top of its price bracket and then averaged. The real average is somewhat lower than $1,557.
The SE Ranking sample leans small. It covers all SEO, not only local work, and SE Ranking says the sample may not be large enough for statistical significance. It is still the closest survey to this market, because 94 percent of its agencies serve small or local businesses.
The two price lists are examples, not averages. BrightLocal and Whitespark sell local SEO software and also run managed services. Their prices are useful because anyone can check them. They are two companies, and they do not describe the market.
Both surveys are also close to two years old. Treat the figures as the order of magnitude.

What is included in a local SEO fee?
A local SEO fee usually covers your Google Business Profile, your listings on other sites, the pages on your own website, reviews and a monthly report. Public service pages show how that splits in practice.
BrightLocal’s $1,299 service lists six parts: research and strategy, website optimization, content, Google Business Profile management, citations and link building, and reporting (BrightLocal). A citation is a listing of your business name, address and phone number on another site. Whitespark’s $499 plan covers the profile only, with weekly posts, review strategy, competitor analysis, spam fighting and monthly reports (Whitespark). Its $1,999 plan adds on-site SEO, a website audit and content.
That gap is the main thing to understand about local SEO pricing. The profile work is the cheaper part. Website pages and content are where the hours go. If two quotes are far apart, check whether both include work on the site.
Google’s own description of local ranking explains why these parts matter. It says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence (Google Business Profile Help). Relevance is how well your profile matches the search. Distance is how far you are from the searcher. Prominence is how well known the business is, and Google says it counts the websites that link to you and the reviews you have.
Which local SEO costs are one-off and which are monthly?
Setup and cleanup are one-off. Posts, reviews, content and reporting recur. The table sorts the common jobs and gives a published price where one exists.
| Job | One-off or monthly | Published price example |
|---|---|---|
| Create and verify a Google Business Profile | One-off | Free. Google says you can add or claim your business at no charge |
| Build or fix directory listings | One-off | BrightLocal: from $3.20 per site, or $2 with bulk credits. Whitespark: packages from $20 to $999 |
| A local SEO project, such as an audit and fix | One-off | Ahrefs: local providers average $5,723.53 per project, an upper estimate. SE Ranking: 66 percent of agencies charge under $2,000 per project |
| Rank and listing tracking software | Recurring | BrightLocal: $369 a year for one location on its entry plan |
| Profile management, posts and review replies | Monthly | Whitespark: $499 a month |
| Full managed local SEO with website work | Monthly | BrightLocal: $1,299 a month. Whitespark: $1,999 a month |
The listing and software prices are from the two companies’ pricing pages (BrightLocal, Whitespark). The free profile is from Google (Google Business Profile Help).
Check the term as well as the price. BrightLocal says its managed service runs on a 12-month campaign basis with no setup fee. Whitespark says it has no minimum commitment and recommends staying at least three months. Two similar monthly fees can commit you to very different totals.
Hourly work is the third option. In the Ahrefs survey the most common hourly rate for local SEO is $75 to $100 (Ahrefs). At that rate a $500 monthly fee buys five to seven hours. That sum is ours, and it is a useful test of whether a quote can cover what it promises.
What can you do yourself for free?
More than in most marketing. Google’s guidance on improving local ranking is a list of things an owner can do without paying anyone (Google Business Profile Help):
- Claim and verify the profile.
- Enter complete and accurate information, including your category and services.
- Keep your hours up to date.
- Add photos and videos.
- Reply to reviews.
The same page says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. It also says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.
Reviews deserve steady effort because customers read them closely. BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey asked 1,002 US adults and was published in February 2026 (BrightLocal). It found 97 percent read reviews for local businesses. It also found 47 percent will not use a business with fewer than 20 reviews, and 74 percent only care about reviews from the last three months. Asking each happy customer for a review costs nothing and has to be kept up.
If you travel to customers, set the service area carefully. Google’s guidelines say a service-area business should have one profile, and that the area should not extend farther than about two hours of driving from your base (Google Business Profile Help).
The local SEO checklist lists these jobs in order. What is left for a paid provider is the part that takes skill or time: service and location pages, technical fixes on the site, links from other local sites and measurement.

Why do local SEO quotes vary so much?
Because the same label covers very different amounts of work. A few things move a quote more than anything else.
- Whether website work is included. The public price lists above show a fourfold gap between profile-only management and a plan with site work.
- How many locations you have. Both price lists are built around a single location. One shop and one service area is the cheapest case.
- Who does it. In the Ahrefs survey, freelancers average $1,150 a month for local SEO and agencies $1,819. The agency against freelancer comparison covers the trade-offs.
- How crowded your trade is locally. Google ranks on prominence as well as distance, so a market full of well-reviewed competitors takes more work. An HVAC company in a large metro faces more of that than a florist in a small town.
Timing changes the total too. A monthly fee only tells you the cost once you know how many months it runs, and how long SEO takes covers that.
How do you judge a local SEO quote?
Ask what you get each month, in hours or in named deliverables, and work out the rate. Then compare the fee with what the work can return.
Count what a new customer is worth, and how many calls or direction requests from Google you would need to cover the fee. The SEO ROI calculator does that sum with your own numbers. A $1,299 fee is cheap for a business where one job pays $4,000, and expensive for one where a sale is $30.
Our SEO pricing page describes how engagements are sized, and the local SEO page describes the work. Mavix quotes after a free review, in writing, with the scope attached, before you commit to anything.
The bottom line
Local SEO has a free layer, a one-off layer and a monthly layer. Do the free layer yourself, pay once for cleanup, and pay monthly only for work that recurs, such as content, reviews and links. The published prices tell you the range. What you should pay depends on how much of the work your site still needs and what a new customer is worth.
Questions people ask about this
Is local SEO cheaper than regular SEO?
In the Ahrefs survey, yes. Providers serving local markets average $1,557 a month, and those serving a worldwide market average $3,473.74. Local work covers a smaller area and fewer pages, so there is less to do. Both figures are upper estimates, because Ahrefs averaged the top of each price bracket.
Can I do local SEO myself?
You can do a large part of it. Google’s own list for improving local ranking is to verify the profile, keep the information complete and accurate, update hours, add photos and reply to reviews. None of that costs money. Website pages, technical fixes and local links are the parts where paid help usually earns its fee.
Does a Google Business Profile cost anything?
No. Google says you can add or claim your business at no charge, and its Business Profile page says creating a profile and listing your business on Google is free. Google also says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Anyone charging you for the listing itself is charging for their time, not for Google.
Is local SEO a one-time cost or a monthly cost?
Both. Claiming the profile, fixing directory listings and repairing the site are one-off jobs. Posts, review replies, new pages and reporting recur. A business with a clean site and a complete profile may only need a short project. Ask any provider which parts of the quote stop once the setup is done.
How much do citations cost?
Little, and you pay once. BrightLocal’s Citation Builder is priced from $3.20 per site, or $2 with bulk credits, with no monthly subscription. Whitespark sells listing packages from $20 to $999 as a one-time fee. A citation is your business name, address and phone number listed on another site, and the job is getting them consistent.
How long is a local SEO contract?
It varies by provider, so read the term. Of the two public price lists used here, BrightLocal runs its managed service on a 12-month campaign basis. Whitespark has no minimum commitment and recommends at least three months. A lower monthly fee on a longer term can cost more in total than a higher fee you can leave.
How many reviews does a local business need?
There is no official number from Google, which says only that more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking. On the customer side, BrightLocal’s 2026 survey of 1,002 US adults found 47 percent will not use a business with fewer than 20 reviews. It also found 74 percent only care about reviews from the last three months.
Do I need local SEO if I already run ads?
They do different jobs. Ads buy a place at the top for as long as you pay, and local SEO builds the profile and pages that show without a charge per click. You can run both. For the ad side, see how much Google Ads cost in 2026. For a worked local example, see the Texas map pack steps.
