Financial services marketing that clears verification

A firm arrived here with a launch that had slipped six weeks because nobody had started Google financial products verification, which needs documentation and a review rather than a form. Every financial client since has been asked about verification on the first call, because it is the only part of the plan with a lead time nobody controls.

Marketing does not behave the same way here.

Financial services marketing is gated in a way almost nothing else is. Google requires anybody advertising financial products to complete a verification process. That means documentation and a review with a real lead time. In several markets it also requires authorisation by the local financial regulator before a single ad can run.

The content also sits in the category search engines treat most cautiously. Who wrote it, and what qualifies them, is weighted heavily. An unattributed article by an unnamed author is worth close to nothing however well it is written.

Then there are claims. Guaranteed returns, specific performance figures, anything that reads as personal advice: those are constrained by the regulator, not the platform, and the consequence lands on the firm's authorisation rather than on a marketing budget. What is left to compete on is credibility, specificity about who you serve, and being findable by the person who has just had the event that made them look.

How your customers actually search.

After an event, not out of interest

Redundancy, inheritance, a house purchase, a business sale, retirement approaching. Financial searching is triggered by something that happened, which makes timing more important than persuasion.

By qualification and by permission

Independent, chartered, regulated, fee-only, fiduciary. The searcher is trying to establish what kind of firm this is before anything else, and the words they use are precise.

By situation rather than by product

What to do with a pension from an old employer, how to structure a business sale, tax on a second property. They describe the circumstance, not the product they need.

How an enquiry becomes a customer.

Different intents take different routes. Serving all of them with one page is the most common structural mistake in this industry.

  • A triggering event, then research over weeks to establish what kind of adviser is even appropriate.
  • A shortlist built largely on credentials and on who explains things clearly rather than on marketing.
  • An initial meeting, which is the real conversion, followed by a decision that often takes months.

Search

What goes wrong in search

SEO in detail
  • Articles with no named author and no credentials, in the category where authorship is weighted most heavily and an anonymous article is close to worthless.
  • Content written about products rather than about situations, when the searcher describes the situation and does not know the product name.
  • Nothing on the site stating regulatory status, authorisation number or what the firm is permitted to advise on, which is the first thing a careful prospect checks.
  • Fee structure absent entirely, in a category where how the adviser is paid is a genuine and reasonable filter.

Paid

Where paid search wins here

Google Ads in detail
  • Completing advertiser verification early, because it has a lead time nobody controls and it blocks every campaign until it is done.
  • Campaigns built around triggering events rather than product names, which is how the searching actually happens.
  • Compliance sign-off built into the ad copy process rather than bolted on, so approved variants exist before a campaign needs them.
  • Negatives against jobs, qualifications, courses, scam and complaint searches, which arrive in volume on financial terms.

Email

What email is for in this industry

Email automation in detail
  • Long-horizon nurture, because the gap between first contact and becoming a client is measured in months, and the firm that stayed useful in the meantime wins.
  • Client review and annual meeting reminders, which keep existing clients and is where the revenue actually lives.

What the report should lead with.

  • Qualified initial meetings booked, not enquiries
  • Cost per meeting against average client value
  • Meeting to client conversion rate
  • Verification and compliance status, tracked as a project rather than assumed

Questions

Questions from this industry.

01 What is financial services advertiser verification and how long does it take?
Google requires advertisers promoting financial products or services to verify themselves before ads can run, and in a number of countries that includes demonstrating authorisation by the local financial regulator. It is a documentation and review process rather than a form, so it has a lead time that nobody at the agency or the firm controls. Start it before you plan the campaign, because it is the one dependency that can hold a launch for weeks.
02 Can a financial firm publish performance figures?
That is a question for your compliance function, and the answer varies by jurisdiction, by permission and by what the figure is. The marketing works well without them. Specificity about who you serve, how you charge and how you work is more persuasive to a serious prospect than a return figure they have no way to verify.
03 Does naming the author of financial articles really matter?
In this category more than almost any other. Search systems weight who produced content and what qualifies them most heavily where the subject can affect somebody's money or wellbeing, and finance is the central example. An article by a named, credentialed adviser with a biography and a regulatory reference is a different asset from the same words published anonymously.
04 Is paid search worth it for financial services given the click costs?
It depends entirely on the value of a client and how long they stay, which in this sector is usually high enough to support a click cost that would be absurd elsewhere. The mistake is judging it on cost per enquiry. Judge it on cost per initial meeting, and then on what proportion of meetings become clients, because that is where financial services campaigns are won or lost.
