The map is decided by things that are not on your website
Google sorts the three map results on distance, relevance and prominence. Distance is fixed unless you open another location. Relevance is mostly your primary category and the services you list. Prominence is reviews, citations and how well known the business is. The website contributes, and it contributes less than the profile.
That is the part most local businesses get wrong. They spend on the site, the site gets better, and the map does not move, because the map was never looking at the site.
What actually moved at All Dogs Rock
The account arrived leaning almost entirely on paid traffic, up against Pet Paradise, Central Bark and the other national chains in West Palm Beach. Three things changed.
The profile was rebuilt from the ground up. Correct name, address and phone, the right categories, a proper description, every service listed. This is the field-by-field work nobody wants to bill for, and it is the work that moves the map.
Every service got its own page, and one keyword. Daycare, boarding, training, grooming, cat boarding, pet hotel. The homepage was pointed at “dog daycare West Palm Beach FL”, a term with about 260 searches a month, and nothing else was allowed to compete for it. Before that, the pages had been competing with each other and none of them won.
Tracking was connected. Search Console and analytics, with calls and visits measured as conversions. Organic search went from barely used to the top-performing channel, and the phone enquiries rose with it. That deck reports the direction rather than a hard count, so no invented figure is attached to it here.
The boring parts are the parts that work
Correct primary category. Every service listed. Photos added regularly. Hours accurate, including holidays. Every review answered, including the bad ones, without getting defensive. Ask for a review the same day the job finishes, by text, with the direct link.
None of that is interesting and all of it compounds. The businesses that win local search are the ones that kept doing it after the first month.
Where local SEO stops
It does not work for a business with no real presence in the area. A profile at a virtual office or a mailbox gets suspended, and a page whose only local content is the town name is a doorway page. Both are named in Google’s own policies, and both put the whole profile at risk rather than only the listing.
It also cannot answer the phone. At more than one trades account the marketing was fine and the calls it produced went unanswered. If the conversion is a call, call answering is part of the marketing, and it gets measured here before anything upstream is touched.
Do the profile first, because it is cheaper, faster and decides more. Then the pages. Then keep asking for reviews.
