Scaling ad spend

How much do Google Ads cost in 2026 for a US small business?

Google Ads search clicks cost a median $5.42 in the US in 2026. Click prices by industry, what a monthly budget buys, management fees and what moves the cost.

A Google Ads search click costs a median of $5.42 in the US in 2026. That figure comes from the 2026 search advertising benchmarks published by LocaliQ with WordStream, which cover 23 industries (LocaliQ). By industry the median runs from $1.63 to $9.87 a click.

Google sets no price list. You choose a daily budget, and an auction sets what each click costs. So the useful answer has three parts: what a click costs in your trade, what a monthly budget buys, and what it costs to have someone manage it.

The short version

  • The median Google Ads search click cost $5.42 across 23 US industries in the 2026 LocaliQ and WordStream benchmarks, with a median cost per lead of $66.69.
  • Click prices in that report run from $1.63 for Arts and Entertainment to $9.87 for Attorneys and Legal Services, a spread of about six to one.
  • Google Ads has no fixed price. You set an average daily budget, and Google says it will not charge more than 30.4 times that amount in a billing period.
  • The median monthly Google Ads spend across client accounts of more than 7,000 agencies using AgencyAnalytics was $1,024.79 in January 2025.
  • Published guides put agency management fees at 10 to 20 percent of ad spend, or a flat monthly fee starting around $500 for smaller budgets.
  • Mavix does not publish a price for Google Ads management. Mavix quotes after a free review of the account.

How much does a Google Ads click cost in 2026?

The median search click cost $5.42 in the 2026 benchmarks, and your trade can sit well above or below that. The report covers 13,474 US search campaigns on Google Ads and Microsoft Ads that ran between April 1, 2025 and March 31, 2026 (WordStream). Its note on the data says the “averages” are medians, and that each category holds at least 52 campaigns.

Arts and Entertainment$1.635.91%$26.84

Every figure in the table is from the same report (LocaliQ). Read the last two columns together. Real Estate pays $3.22 a click, less than the overall median, and still pays $102.51 a lead because 3.70 percent of its clicks convert.

A second dataset gives a much lower number, and both are worth seeing. AgencyAnalytics reports a Google Ads cost per click of $1.81 for 2025, drawn from the client accounts of more than 7,000 agencies on its platform (AgencyAnalytics). That page does not say which campaign types or countries are included. The LocaliQ figure is US search campaigns only, which is the closer match for a US small business buying search ads.

For what those clicks turn into, the Google Ads cost per lead benchmarks post goes through the lead figures row by row.

How does Google decide what you pay?

An auction decides it, each time someone searches. Google says you often pay less than your maximum bid. You pay only what is needed to clear the Ad Rank thresholds and beat the advertiser directly below you (Google Ads Help).

Ad Rank is Google’s score for where your ad shows. Google lists six things that go into it (Google Ads Help):

  • Your bid.
  • The quality of your ad and landing page.
  • The Ad Rank thresholds, which are minimum standards an ad has to meet.
  • How competitive the auction is.
  • The context of the search, such as the words typed, the person’s location, the device and the time.
  • The expected impact of your ad assets, such as a phone number or extra links.

The same page says higher quality ads can often lead to lower costs per click. That is the part of the price you control. Two businesses bidding on the same search can pay different amounts for the same position.

What does a typical monthly budget buy?

A budget buys clicks at your trade’s click price, and the count is simple division. The table below divides three monthly budgets by the benchmark click prices above. It is our arithmetic on the published medians, and it is a planning guide only.

Monthly ad budgetClicks at $5.42 (all industries)Clicks at $9.87 (legal)Clicks at $2.05 (restaurants)Leads at $66.69 each
$1,00018410148715
$2,5004612531,21937
$5,0009225062,43975

Two published figures help place those rows. The median monthly Google Ads spend across AgencyAnalytics users’ client accounts was $1,024.79 in January 2025 (AgencyAnalytics). That is a median across every kind of client, so half of the accounts spent less.

Google’s own rules explain how the monthly figure behaves. You set an average daily budget, and Google multiplies it by 30.4 to get the monthly limit. Spend on a single day can reach twice the daily budget, and the monthly charge stays within 30.4 times it (Google Ads Help). A $1,000 month is a daily budget of about $33.

Before fixing a number, run your own click price and close rate through the Google Ads ROI calculator. A plumbing firm at home improvement click prices and a restaurant are not buying the same thing with $1,000.

What do Google Ads management fees cost?

Management is priced in three ways: a percentage of ad spend, a flat monthly fee, or an hourly rate. We could not find a recent survey of management fees with a stated sample. What follows is what two named publishers report, with what each figure is.

Pricing modelPublished figureWhere it comes from
Percentage of ad spendTypically 10 to 20 percent of monthly spendAgencyAnalytics pricing guide for agencies, published July 17, 2025
Flat monthly feeStarts around $500 for smaller budgetsThe same AgencyAnalytics guide
Hourly rateMost agencies charge $100 to $149 an hour for Google AdsClutch pricing guide, updated September 21, 2026, from client reviews on Clutch

The AgencyAnalytics figures are from a guide written for agencies and built on interviews with agency owners (AgencyAnalytics). They describe common practice. They are not a measured average.

The Clutch figures come from reviews that verified clients left on its directory (Clutch). The same page puts the average monthly cost of a reviewed project at $7,165.33. Clutch’s reviewed projects most often cost $10,000 to $49,999 in total, so that average reflects larger engagements than a single-location business would buy.

Applied to the budget table, 10 to 20 percent of a $2,500 budget is $250 to $500 a month. That is arithmetic on the published range, not a quote. Our ads pricing page sets out how the engagement is sized. Mavix quotes after a free review, in writing, before you commit to anything.

What moves your cost up or down?

Five things move it, and you control three of them.

Your industry. The benchmark table shows a six to one spread in click price before you touch a setting. A law firm and a restaurant are in different auctions.

Your location. Google lists the person’s location as part of the context of each auction (Google Ads Help). The benchmarks are US-wide medians, so one metro can sit above or below them.

The quality of your ad and page. Google says higher quality ads can often lead to lower costs per click. This is where a well-written ad and a page that matches the search earn their keep.

What you count as a lead. Cost per lead depends on what the account records as a conversion. If tracking is broken, the cost looks wrong in either direction. The tracking setup checklist covers what to check first.

Which searches you pay for. Budget spent on searches you cannot serve buys clicks and no customers. The Google Ads audit checklist lists the checks in order.

If you run a home service trade, compare this against pay-per-lead ads too. Local Services Ads against Google Ads covers how the two are priced. If the account needs a second pair of eyes, that is what Google Ads management is for.

The bottom line

Google Ads cost what your auction charges, multiplied by the clicks you can afford. Start from the click price in your trade, work out what a month of clicks should produce, and add the management fee as a separate line. Then judge the total against what a customer is worth to you. A published median tells you the size of the market. Your margin tells you what you can pay.

Questions people ask about this

Is there a minimum spend on Google Ads?

Google’s budget documentation describes no minimum. You set an average daily budget for each campaign, and Google will not charge more than 30.4 times that amount in a billing period. A small budget still runs. It simply buys fewer clicks, and at a $5.42 median click it takes time to gather enough data to judge the account.

How much should a small business spend on Google Ads each month?

Enough to buy a useful number of clicks at your trade’s price. At the $5.42 median, $1,000 buys about 184 clicks. For reference, the median monthly Google Ads spend across AgencyAnalytics client accounts was $1,024.79 in January 2025. Work back from the leads you need and what each one is worth, then set the budget.

Why are Google Ads so expensive for lawyers?

Because many firms bid on the same searches and each client is worth a lot. Attorneys and Legal Services has the highest median click price in the 2026 benchmarks at $9.87, and the highest cost per lead at $131.63. Google names auction competitiveness as one of the factors in Ad Rank, and legal searches are a crowded auction.

Do I pay Google if nobody clicks my ad?

On a standard search campaign with cost-per-click bidding you pay when someone clicks. Google describes the actual cost per click as the final amount you are charged for a click. An ad that is shown and not clicked costs nothing under that bidding method. Other campaign types can charge in other ways, so check the bidding setting.

Can Google spend more than my daily budget?

Yes, on a single day. Google says spend can reach up to twice your average daily budget on a given day. Across the billing period it will not charge more than 30.4 times the daily budget. So a $33 daily budget can spend $66 on a busy day and still end the month at about $1,000.

Is the management fee included in my ad budget?

Usually not. The ad budget is paid to Google for clicks, and the management fee is paid to whoever runs the account. The published guides quoted here describe the fee as a percentage of spend, a flat monthly amount or an hourly rate. Ask any provider to show both figures as separate lines before you sign.

Are Google Ads cheaper than SEO?

They are priced differently, so the comparison depends on time. Ads cost money for every click from the first day and stop when the budget stops. SEO costs a monthly fee and takes longer to produce enquiries. The comparison of SEO and Google Ads sets out when each one makes sense for a small business.

What is a good cost per click?

One that produces customers at a price your margin can carry. A cheap click that never converts is the expensive one. In the 2026 benchmarks, Automotive Repair pays $4.35 a click and $29.96 a lead, while Real Estate pays $3.22 a click and $102.51 a lead. Judge the click by what it turns into.
