Regulated industry

iGaming marketing that starts with the licence, not the campaign

Several operators arrived here after an agency ran one ad account across multiple states or markets on the assumption that geo targeting was enough. It was not. Every channel in this category is gated by where you hold a licence, and getting that mapping wrong is not wasted spend. It is a compliance problem with your name on it. The first question is always which markets.

Marketing does not behave the same way here.

In most industries geography is a targeting decision. Here it is a legal one. Google Ads requires gambling advertisers to be certified and to hold the relevant licence for each specific jurisdiction they advertise into, and the permitted formats vary by market. Meta requires prior written permission and applies its own country-by-country list.

Several markets impose their own advertising codes on top: rules on who may appear in creative, mandatory responsible gambling messaging, restrictions on bonus and free bet promotion, and in some markets time-of-day restrictions on broadcast that bleed into digital expectations. Campaign structure has to mirror licensing structure. One account spanning several markets is not an efficiency. It is an incident waiting to be investigated.

The second structural fact is affiliate dominance. In most gambling verticals the top organic positions are held by affiliate comparison sites rather than by operators, which means an operator doing SEO is often competing with the same partners it pays commission to. That is a strategy question rather than a technical one, and it is usually never asked.

How your customers actually search.

Brand plus offer

Operator name plus bonus, promo code, free bet. High intent, and the position is frequently occupied by an affiliate rather than by the operator whose brand is being searched.

Comparison and best-of

Best betting sites, new casinos, highest odds. Affiliate territory almost without exception, and the realistic operator play here is partnership rather than outranking.

Mechanic and rules research

How a market works, what a term means, how a bonus wagering requirement is calculated. Genuinely informational, largely ignored by operators, and it builds the authority that brand terms rely on.

Payment, verification and withdrawal

How long a withdrawal takes, what verification is needed, which methods are supported. Low glamour, high volume, and it is what a hesitant depositor is actually looking for.

How an enquiry becomes a customer.

Different intents take different routes. Serving all of them with one page is the most common structural mistake in this industry.

  • Discovery is usually through an affiliate or a brand search rather than through a generic category term the operator ranks for.
  • Registration and verification is where most of the loss happens, and it is a product and UX problem far more than a marketing one.
  • First deposit is driven by offer clarity, and unclear wagering terms lose more depositors than a smaller bonus would.
  • Repeat play runs on lifecycle messaging under the same jurisdictional rules as the first deposit, including exclusions that must be honoured across every channel.

Search

What goes wrong in search

SEO in detail
  • One site serving several jurisdictions with no clean separation, which is both a ranking problem and a compliance one.
  • Terms and conditions for bonuses written to be technically complete and practically unreadable, which suppresses conversion at the exact moment of decision.
  • No content on verification, withdrawal times or payment methods, which is a large share of what hesitant users search before depositing.
  • Responsible gambling pages treated as a compliance checkbox rather than as content, when they carry trust signals that affect the whole domain.
  • Competing with your own affiliates for brand terms without ever having agreed who should hold which position.

Paid

Where paid search wins here

Google Ads in detail
  • Google Ads certification per jurisdiction, with account and campaign structure that mirrors the licences held rather than spanning them.
  • Meta only where prior written permission has been granted for that market, and never on the assumption that geo targeting substitutes for it.
  • Brand defence where permitted, since affiliates bidding on operator brand terms is common and frequently uncontested.
  • Affiliate and media partnerships, which in this vertical often deliver more qualified volume than direct buying and sit under different rules.

Email

What email is for in this industry

Email automation in detail
  • Lifecycle messaging that respects self-exclusion and marketing preference data as a hard technical constraint, not a suppression list someone remembers to update.
  • Verification completion prompts, which recover registrations that stalled before a first deposit and cost nothing to win again.
  • Reactivation under the responsible gambling rules of each market, which differ enough that a single global sequence is not safe.

What the report should lead with.

  • Cost per verified first-time depositor, not cost per registration
  • Registration to verification to deposit completion rate at each step
  • Player value by source over 90 days rather than at signup
  • Brand search share of voice against affiliates
  • Compliance exceptions, which should be zero and should be reported as a number

Questions

Questions from this industry.

01 Can an operator run Google Ads for gambling?
Yes, with certification, and only into jurisdictions where you hold the relevant licence and Google permits the format. The certification is per market rather than global. The most common failure seen here is one account advertising into several markets on the assumption that geo targeting is enough, which it is not.
02 Our affiliates outrank us for our own brand name. Is that normal?
Extremely, and it is worth deciding deliberately rather than by accident. Some operators are content to pay commission on brand traffic because the affiliate also drives discovery. Others want the position back. Both are defensible. Having never made the decision is not.
03 Is iGaming SEO viable when affiliates hold every commercial term?
Not by attacking best-of pages head on, which is usually a waste. The ground that is available is mechanics, verification, payments, rules and responsible play. It is less exciting, it is where a hesitant depositor actually goes, and it supports the brand terms that convert.
04 Who carries the risk if a betting campaign breaches an advertising code?
You do, in every market known here. The licence is yours. That is precisely why campaign structure follows the licence structure, and why no market gets run without a licence for it having been shown first.
