Regulated industry

Crypto marketing that survives a policy review

The crypto teams that arrive here have usually just been suspended, having assumed the category was permitted because competitors were advertising. The competitors were certified and they were not. Advertising crypto is conditional, and the condition is a registration most teams discover only after the account is gone. A site built for a launch ranks for nothing the week after.

Marketing does not behave the same way here.

The advertising platforms did not ban crypto. They gated it, and the gate is regulatory rather than editorial. Google Ads requires cryptocurrency advertisers to be certified, and for US targeting that has meant registration with FinCEN as a Money Services Business or status as a federal or state chartered bank entity, with the permitted scope varying by product and country. Meta requires written permission and evaluates licences and registrations before granting it.

Neither is a form you fill in the afternoon before launch. Paid acquisition has a lead time measured in weeks and a prerequisite that sits with your legal and compliance function rather than with marketing.

The second structural problem is specific to this category and largely self-inflicted. An enormous amount of crypto marketing is built around launch moments, and a site built for a launch ranks for nothing once the launch is over. Search demand in crypto is dominated by explanation: how a thing works, whether it is safe, how to do a specific task, what a term means. That demand is constant, it is enormous, and most projects have written none of it because it does not feel like marketing.

How your customers actually search.

How does this actually work

Mechanism, custody, fees, what happens if something fails. Very high volume, evergreen, and the projects that answer it properly earn the trust that a launch announcement never does.

Is this safe and is it a scam

Legitimacy checks, audit reports, team background, withdrawal experiences. Every serious buyer in this category runs this search and most projects have nothing to show them.

Task and troubleshooting

How to bridge, how to stake, why a transaction failed, how to recover access. Support-shaped searches that bring in exactly the people who already use the product.

Comparison and fees

Platform against platform, fee comparisons, best for a specific use. Buying intent, and usually held by aggregators rather than by the products themselves.

How an enquiry becomes a customer.

Different intents take different routes. Serving all of them with one page is the most common structural mistake in this industry.

  • Explanation content earns the first visit, usually well before any intent to sign up exists.
  • Legitimacy checking happens across several sessions and several sources, and it is the step most projects fail because there is nothing to find.
  • Signup and verification is where regulated products lose people, and it is measurable and fixable rather than mysterious.
  • Retention comes from the product working, and from lifecycle messaging that does not read like a price alert.

Search

What goes wrong in search

SEO in detail
  • A site built for a launch that ranks for nothing three months later, which is most of the category.
  • Documentation and help content on a separate subdomain with no internal linking, so the strongest content the project owns contributes nothing to the main domain.
  • Whitepaper as a PDF instead of pages, which is a large body of expert content that search cannot use.
  • No content on safety, custody or audits, which is exactly what a hesitant user searches before depositing anything.
  • Price and chart pages targeting terms owned by the large aggregators, at the expense of the task and mechanism content nobody is competing for.

Paid

Where paid search wins here

Google Ads in detail
  • Google Ads certification, started early, since the registration prerequisite sits outside marketing and takes real time.
  • Meta written permission where the product and market qualify, rather than launching and hoping the review is lenient.
  • Crypto-native networks and publications, which accept the category without certification and are frequently cheaper than the gated platforms.
  • Search campaigns on task and mechanism terms rather than on speculative price terms, which attract traffic that never converts to a funded account.

Email

What email is for in this industry

Email automation in detail
  • Onboarding sequences that carry a user through verification and first use, which is where funded accounts are actually won or lost.
  • Education series that answer the safety and custody questions, which shortens a decision that otherwise never resolves.
  • Product and security update messaging, which in this category is read rather than ignored and is one of the few trust signals a user actively welcomes.

What the report should lead with.

  • Cost per verified and funded account, not cost per signup
  • Signup to verification to first transaction completion rates
  • Non-brand organic traffic outside launch periods, which is the real test of whether the content works
  • Share of traffic from evergreen explanation content against announcement content
  • Certification and permission status by platform and market, tracked as a live prerequisite

Questions

Questions from this industry.

01 Why was our crypto ad account suspended when competitors are advertising?
Almost always because they are certified and you are not. Google requires cryptocurrency advertisers to be certified, and for US targeting that has meant FinCEN registration as a Money Services Business or equivalent chartered status. Meta requires prior written permission. Neither is granted by default and neither is quick, so it needs starting well before a launch date.
02 How long does crypto ad certification take?
Longer than a marketing timeline usually allows, because the prerequisite is a registration held by the business rather than a form submitted by the agency. Begin it the moment paid acquisition is on the roadmap, and plan the launch assuming organic and owned channels carry it.
03 Is SEO worth it for a crypto project that has not launched?
It is the best available use of the pre-launch period, because explanation and mechanism content takes months to rank and the demand for it does not depend on your launch. Projects that write it before launch arrive with traffic. Projects that start after launch spend the launch window with nothing.
04 Our crypto documentation ranks better than our marketing site. Is that a problem?
It is a signal. Docs rank because they answer real questions, which is what search rewards. The fix is to link them properly into the main domain and to write marketing pages that are as useful as the docs are, not to suppress them.
