Law firm SEO

Law firm SEO written in the words your clients search

Your practice area pages read like a brief. The person who needs you typed "can my landlord keep my deposit" at midnight and found a firm that answered in those words. Your site says "landlord-tenant litigation" and ranks for the names of your partners.

What people type when they need a lawyer

Almost nobody searches for a practice area by its legal name. They search for what happened.

  • The situation. “rear ended at a red light who pays”, “fired after filing workers comp claim”, “served divorce papers what now”.
  • The cost. “how much does a DUI lawyer cost”, “do personal injury lawyers charge upfront”, “probate attorney fees”.
  • The deadline. “how long do I have to sue after a car accident”, “how long to respond to a summons”.
  • The decision. “do I need a lawyer for a first DUI”, “can I write my own will”.
  • The hire. “car accident lawyer near me”, “divorce attorney free consultation”.

The law firms industry page covers why clients search this way. The website job is to have a page for each group in each practice area you want work from. The last group is contested on the map and in ads, covered under local SEO for law firms.

The copy makes claims the rules do not allow. ABA Model Rule 7.1 says a lawyer shall not make a false or misleading communication about the lawyer or the lawyer’s services. The comment to the rule adds that an unsubstantiated comparison with other firms may mislead. “The best injury firm in Ohio” is the kind of line an SEO writer adds for a keyword. The Model Rules are a model, and your state’s version is the one that binds you.

Titles imply a certification. Model Rule 7.2 restricts stating or implying that a lawyer is a certified specialist. It also says a communication must include the name and contact details of at least one responsible lawyer or firm. Both are easy to miss in a page title.

Nobody is named as the author. Google says it gives more weight to experience, expertise and trust on topics that affect a person’s financial stability or safety. It asks whether a page carries a byline where a reader would expect one. An unsigned article on child custody gives the reader and Google nothing to check.

Pages are produced in bulk. Fifty city pages or two hundred AI-written answers fit Google’s description of scaled content abuse and doorway pages. Legal sites are a common place to find both.

The law on the page has changed. A deadline or a fee threshold that was right in 2022 may be wrong now. A page with no review date cannot be trusted by a client or checked by your own team.

The work, month by month

These timings are our rule of thumb. No position is promised.

Month one. You get a list of your practice areas set against the searches clients type and the pages you have. We check indexing, fix technical faults and agree a review step with a named lawyer. Nothing is published without it.

Months two and three. Each priority practice area gets a main page in plain language plus pages for the cost, deadline and decision questions. Attorney biographies are rewritten around the matters each lawyer handles. Our content strategy guide explains the order.

Months four to six. Existing pages get a reviewed-by line and a date. Internal links are set so every question page leads to its practice area page. We look for links from bar associations, local press and organizations the firm already supports.

What it costs and what moves the cost

We do not publish a law firm SEO price. A quote follows a free review, and the SEO pricing page shows how plans are built. For wider ranges, read how much SEO costs.

The cost moves with the number of practice areas, the number of offices, how contested the city is, and how much lawyer review time each page needs.

For scale, legal clicks on Google Ads averaged $9.87 in LocaliQ and WordStream’s 2026 benchmarks, which cover campaigns from April 2025 to March 2026. Organic visits are not billed per click. The SEO ROI calculator lets you test the sums with your own case values.

How law firm SEO is measured

Your report starts with signed matters from organic search, by practice area. Consultations booked and qualified enquiries come next. Rankings and visits explain the movement.

That needs your intake team to record where each enquiry came from. It also needs care with what the contact form collects. Model Rule 1.18 says a lawyer shall not use or reveal information learned from a prospective client. So the story someone types into your form should not be copied into analytics or ad tools. We track that a form was sent and leave its contents in your case system.

When SEO is the wrong first move for a firm

If you need signed matters this quarter, start with Google Ads for law firms and build search work behind it.

If nobody answers enquiries inside the hour, fix intake first. More visits will not help.

If no lawyer has time to review pages, wait. Unreviewed legal content is a risk to the firm that no ranking repays.

And if most of your work comes by referral in a narrow field with few searches, SEO may only ever be a small channel for you. We will say so on the free review.

Questions

Questions owners ask about this

01 Do the lawyer advertising rules apply to our website?
ABA Model Rule 7.1 covers every communication about a lawyer's services, and its comment says that includes advertising. Your state has its own version of the rule. A lawyer at the firm should review website copy against it.
02 Can we publish case results and verdicts?
The comment to Model Rule 7.1 says truthful results can still mislead if they create an unjustified expectation of the same outcome. It adds that a suitable disclaimer may prevent that. Check your state rule before publishing any figure.
03 Can our pages say we are specialists or experts?
Model Rule 7.2 says a lawyer shall not state or imply certification as a specialist unless certified by an approved or accredited organization that is named. Describing what you handle is safer than a title.
04 How long does law firm SEO take?
Months. Legal searches are contested, and Google decides the timing. Our rule of thumb is to judge the work on consultations and signed matters from organic search across two quarters, not on a ranking in week six.
05 Should we write a page for every city we serve?
Only where the page says something true and specific about that place, such as the court, the local process or your office there. Pages that only swap the city name match what Google calls doorway abuse.
06 Do you write the legal content yourselves?
We draft in plain language from the searches clients type. A named lawyer at your firm reviews and approves every page, and the page says who that is.
