Law firm local SEO

Local SEO for law firms that want the calls from the map

Someone two miles from your office searched "divorce lawyer near me" and saw three firms. Yours was not one of them. One of the three has a keyword-stuffed name, and another lists an office that is a shared suite nobody works from.

When a search has a place in it, or the words “near me”, Google shows a map with three firms above the ordinary results.

  • “personal injury lawyer near me”
  • “divorce lawyer” with a city or neighbourhood
  • “criminal lawyer open now”
  • “immigration attorney near me”
  • “free consultation lawyer near me”
  • a firm’s name with “reviews”

Google says these results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that no one can pay for a better local ranking. For a law firm, relevance comes from the category and the practice areas listed. Prominence comes from reviews, links and how well known the firm is.

The law firms page explains that a client contacts several firms in one sitting. On the map, that means the three listed firms get the calls and the fourth gets none.

What goes wrong on a law firm profile

The firm name carries keywords. “Harlan Law: Car Accident and Injury Lawyers Phoenix” is a name with a keyword list attached. Google’s guidelines say the name should reflect the real-world name used on your storefront, website and stationery. There is a second reason for a firm to care. The comment to ABA Model Rule 7.1 treats firm names and professional designations as communications about a lawyer’s services.

Offices are listed that nobody works from. The same Google guidelines say a virtual office the business does not operate from is not eligible for a profile. Satellite “offices” in shared suites are a common way for a firm to lose its main listing.

Lawyer profiles are left to drift. Google allows a public-facing lawyer to have a profile at the office where clients can reach them. In a firm with several lawyers, the firm profile is separate and each lawyer’s profile carries only that lawyer’s name. Profiles for lawyers who left years ago still take calls meant for you.

Reviews are paid for. Model Rule 7.2 says a lawyer shall not give anything of value to a person for recommending the lawyer’s services. It lists narrow exceptions, such as nominal gifts that are not compensation. Google’s Maps policy separately prohibits incentives in exchange for a review. Your state’s rule decides what is allowed, so ask before any review campaign starts.

Replies give away the matter. Model Rule 1.6 says a lawyer shall not reveal information relating to the representation of a client. Arguing the facts of a case in a public reply does that.

This section describes published rules. It is not legal advice.

The work in order

Timings are our rule of thumb. Positions are Google’s to decide.

Weeks one and two. You receive an audit of the firm profile, every lawyer profile and every office. Ineligible or duplicate listings are removed. The primary category is set to the firm’s main practice, and practice areas are listed as services in client language. The Google Business Profile guide covers each field.

Weeks three to six. The firm’s name, address and phone are matched across legal directories, the state bar listing and general directories. Each office gets a page on the site with the address, the courts it serves and the lawyers based there.

Every week after that. A review request goes to every client at the close of a matter, worded the same for all, with no reward attached. A named person replies to each review. The local SEO checklist keeps the routine short.

What it costs and what moves the cost

We do not publish a law firm local SEO price. A quote follows a free review of your listings, and the SEO pricing page shows how plans are structured. For general ranges, read what local SEO costs in 2026.

The number of offices and the number of lawyer profiles move the cost most. Cleaning up after a previous agency that created fake locations takes longer than starting clean.

A verified profile has a second use. Google says Local Services advertisers must have a public and verified Business Profile, so this work comes before those ads. That side is covered under Google Ads for law firms.

How it is measured

The monthly report shows calls from each profile, clicks to the site, direction requests, consultations booked and matters signed from those. Profile links carry tags so intake can tell a map enquiry from an ad enquiry.

Review count, average rating and reply time are listed for the firm and for each lawyer profile.

When local SEO is the wrong first move

If your clients come from across the state or the country, the map matters less. Start with law firm SEO.

If the firm is about to move office, wait until the move is done.

If you have no reviews and no process for asking, expect slow progress until that changes.

If you need consultations this month, ads will get there sooner than local SEO. We would run both in that case and say which one is paying.

Questions

Questions owners ask about this

01 Can each attorney have a Google Business Profile?
Google's guidelines list lawyers as individual practitioners. A lawyer who is public-facing and can be contacted directly at that office during stated hours may have one. The firm keeps its own profile, and the lawyer's profile uses the lawyer's name only.
02 Can we list a virtual office to rank in another city?
No. Google's guidelines say a virtual office you do not operate from is not eligible for a Business Profile. Listing one puts the profile at risk of suspension.
03 Can we give clients a gift card for a review?
Google's Maps policy prohibits incentives in exchange for reviews. ABA Model Rule 7.2 also says a lawyer shall not give anything of value to a person for recommending the lawyer's services, with narrow exceptions. Check your state's rule.
04 How should a firm reply to a negative review?
Without confirming the reviewer was a client and without any detail of the matter. Model Rule 1.6 says a lawyer shall not reveal information relating to the representation of a client unless an exception applies. A short reply inviting a call is enough.
05 Can we add practice areas to our firm name on Google?
Only if they are part of the firm's real name as used on your door, website and letterhead. Google's guidelines say the name must reflect the real-world name.
06 Will local SEO get us into the top three on the map?
We cannot promise a position. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, and the searcher's location changes the result. We report calls and consultations that came from the profile.
