SEO and paid search for Chicago businesses, city and suburbs

Chicago customers split into two groups that barely overlap: people searching inside the city by neighborhood, and people in the suburbs searching by town. If your pages speak to one group, you are invisible to the other. This page covers the size of the market, how crowded your trade is and how we work with a Chicago business from Los Angeles.

Chicago by the numbers: 2.7 million in the city, 9.4 million in the metro

The city of Chicago had 2,731,585 residents on 1 July 2025 (Census Bureau, city and town estimates). The metro area, which the Census Bureau names Chicago, Naperville and Elgin and which reaches into northwest Indiana, had 9,434,123 (Census Bureau, metro area estimates).

Put those two figures together and you see the shape of the market. Fewer than three in ten metro residents live inside the city limits. That share is our arithmetic on the two Census estimates. For a service business, the suburbs are where the larger part of the customers are.

The metro had 248,519 employer establishments in 2023, and 146,092 of them had fewer than five employees (County Business Patterns). Our post on US business counts by market sets Chicago beside New York, Miami and Atlanta.

Neighborhood names in the city, town names outside it

Inside Chicago, people search by neighborhood and by side of town. Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Wicker Park, Logan Square, Pilsen, Hyde Park and the Loop all show up in search terms, along with “North Side” and “South Side”.

Outside the city limits the town is the unit. Naperville, Schaumburg, Evanston, Oak Park, Aurora, Joliet, Elgin and Orland Park each return their own set of businesses. People also say “the western suburbs” or “the North Shore”, though they type the town when they want a phone number.

A business on the Northwest Side can serve Park Ridge and Niles as easily as Logan Square. Whether to chase city or suburb searches is a choice about drive time and job size, and it is the first thing we settle in local SEO work.

Source for every row: the metropolitan area file of County Business Patterns: 2023. One-person firms with no payroll are not counted.

The truck transportation row is the one to notice. Chicago has 12,968 trucking locations, more than the Los Angeles metro (8,285) or the New York metro (7,626) in the same file. Freight, warehousing and the factories they serve are a large part of who buys here. A company selling to them is found through searches for a part, a lane or a certification. Our manufacturing page covers that kind of buyer.

What competing in Chicago costs, and where it is cheaper

Start with pay. The average weekly wage in the Chicago area was $1,824 in the first quarter of 2026, compared with $1,654 nationally (BLS, Chicago Area Economic Summary). The same summary shows 410,400 manufacturing jobs in July 2026. Higher pay means higher job values, and businesses with higher job values can bid more for a lead.

Now the cheaper part. The metro has 768 roofing contractors with staff across a region of 9.4 million people. Spread over dozens of suburbs, the number competing for any one town is small. In our view a roofer or HVAC firm that owns three or four suburbs properly will spend less per booked job than one bidding on “Chicago” across the whole metro.

Weather adds a calendar. Furnace and roof searches follow the season, so the budget should too. The marketing budget calculator is a quick way to sketch that before we talk.

Illinois and Chicago rules that affect what you can advertise

Roofing is licensed by the state. Roofing contractors are licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation under the Illinois Roofing Industry Licensing Act (IDFPR). If you are a roofing company, your license number belongs on your site and your profile.

General contracting is licensed by the city. A City of Chicago general contractor license is required for building construction, alteration, repair and demolition work within the city (Chicago Department of Buildings). That license stops at the city line. A contractor who also advertises in Evanston or Oak Park should check what each suburb asks for.

We do not give legal advice. We check that what your ads and pages claim matches the licenses you hold, and we ask you to confirm anything we are unsure of.

How we work with a Chicago business

Mavix works with Chicago businesses remotely from its US office in Los Angeles. We have no office in Chicago, no staff there and no named Chicago clients, and this page reports no local results.

Here is what the work looks like from your side. You give us read access to your Google Search Console, your analytics and your ad account. We send back a written review of where you appear, where you do not, and which suburbs or product searches we would go after first. Calls are booked in Central time.

The method is on the SEO page, and paid search is on the Google Ads page. We quote after that free review. How we set fees is explained on the SEO pricing page.

Questions to put to any agency before you sign in Chicago

  • Ask whether they would target the city, the suburbs or both, and how they would decide.
  • Ask how they would handle a slow season. A plan with the same spend in January and June has not looked at your trade.
  • Ask if they have worked with a business that sells to other businesses, if that is you. Factory and fleet buyers search differently from homeowners.
  • Ask who holds the logins. The ad account, the profile and the analytics should be in your name.
  • Ask to see how they report phone calls, since a service business here lives on them.
  • Ask them to say plainly where their team sits.

For a market with a different mix of trades, see the Houston page. Every city is listed on the locations page.

Questions

Questions owners ask about this

01 Does Mavix have an office in Chicago?
No. Mavix has no office, no staff and no named clients in Chicago. We work with Chicago businesses remotely from our US office at 3435 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles.
02 How many businesses are in the Chicago metro area?
The Census Bureau counted 248,519 employer establishments in the Chicago, Naperville and Elgin metro area in 2023, and 146,092 of them had fewer than five employees.
03 Should I build pages for the suburbs as well as the city?
Only for places you serve and can say something true about. A page for Naperville needs a reason to exist beyond the name, such as the jobs you do there, the drive time and what differs from the city.
04 Do Chicago contractors need a license that shows up in marketing?
The City of Chicago requires a general contractor license for building, alteration, repair and demolition work in the city. Illinois licenses roofing contractors at state level. Showing a valid license is a trust signal that an unlicensed firm cannot match.
05 Is Chicago cheaper to compete in than New York?
There are fewer competitors. The Chicago metro has under half the employer establishments of the New York metro in the same Census file. Fewer bidders does not guarantee cheaper clicks in your trade, so we check the search results before quoting.
06 Can a remote agency handle a business that sells to factories and fleets?
Yes. Buyers in manufacturing and trucking search by part, service and specification more than by neighborhood, so the work depends on knowing your products. That knowledge comes from you in the first weeks.
