SEO and paid search for Philadelphia businesses, city, Main Line and South Jersey

Your customers may live in Pennsylvania, New Jersey or Delaware, and each of those has different rules and different search results. Three in four people in the Philadelphia metro live outside the city itself. This page covers where they search from, how crowded your trade is, what the city asks of contractors, and how we work with you from Los Angeles.

A city of 1.6 million inside a four-state metro of 6.3 million

Philadelphia had 1,574,281 residents on 1 July 2025 (Census Bureau, city and town estimates). The metro area had 6,329,118. Its official name is Philadelphia, Camden and Wilmington, and it takes in parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland (Census Bureau, metro area estimates).

The city is about a quarter of the metro, on our division of those two figures. The remaining three quarters are in the Pennsylvania suburbs, South Jersey and northern Delaware.

For businesses, the Census Bureau counted 153,791 employer establishments in the metro in 2023, with 83,514 of them under five employees (County Business Patterns). That is close to Houston’s count, in a metro with about 1.6 million fewer people. How to read a figure like this is covered in our post on US business counts by market.

What people type: Center City, the Main Line, Bucks County, Cherry Hill

In the city, searches carry neighborhood names. Center City, Fishtown, Northern Liberties, South Philly, University City, Manayunk, Chestnut Hill and the Northeast are all in everyday use. Each has its own cluster of businesses on the map.

West of the city, people say the Main Line and type the town: Ardmore, Bryn Mawr, Wayne. Further out they search by county, which is less common in other metros. Bucks County, Montgomery County, Delaware County and Chester County all appear in search terms, alongside towns like King of Prussia, Doylestown, Media and West Chester.

Then there are the bridges. Cherry Hill, Camden and Mount Laurel are in New Jersey, and Wilmington is in Delaware. A customer there may be fifteen minutes away and still under another state’s rules. Our local SEO work for this metro starts with which states you can serve.

Legal services3,59337,256
Offices of physicians3,56553,730

Plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors2,11825,980
Roofing contractors4223,374
Hospitals131163,107
Pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing8314,453

These rows are taken from the metropolitan area file of County Business Patterns: 2023. Businesses without paid employees are outside the count.

Read the physician row against Houston. Philadelphia has 3,565 physician offices employing 53,730 people. Houston has almost the same staff, 53,728, spread over 5,931 offices. Medicine here is organized into bigger groups, many tied to hospital systems. An independent healthcare practice is competing with organizations that have their own marketing departments.

Pharmaceutical manufacturing is the other marker. The 14,453 employees in that row are about double Chicago’s figure of 7,315 in the same file. Suppliers, labs and staffing firms that sell to that field are found through specialist searches, with little local wording in them.

What it costs to compete in Philadelphia

Health care sets the tone. The Philadelphia area had 749,300 jobs in education and health services in July 2026, out of 3,133,200 nonfarm jobs (BLS, Philadelphia Area Economic Summary). On our division that is about 24 percent of all jobs. Searches for treatments, specialists and senior care are where we would expect the stiffest bidding.

Pay is moderate by East Coast standards. The same summary gives an average weekly wage of $1,708 in the first quarter of 2026, against $1,654 nationally and well under the New York area’s figure. A click that would be out of reach in Manhattan can make sense here.

Trades are a mixed picture. There are 2,118 plumbing and air conditioning firms and 422 roofers across the whole metro. Divided among three states and many townships, the field in any one town is thin. That is our reading of the counts, and we confirm it by looking at who ranks in your towns. The keyword clustering tool helps sort your search terms by town before that review.

Licensing in Philadelphia and across the state lines

Philadelphia has its own contractor license. The city says a Contractor License is required for a business doing work that involves construction, demolition or repair (City of Philadelphia). Electrical, plumbing, fire suppression and complete demolition need their own special licenses.

The same page gives one exception. A business that only works on existing one or two family homes, and does no special trade work, does not need the city license. It registers with the State as a home improvement contractor instead.

If you are a general contractor advertising in Cherry Hill or Wilmington as well, New Jersey and Delaware have their own requirements. We ask every contractor which registrations they hold before writing a page for a town. We do not give legal advice, and we would rather drop a town from the plan than advertise work you are not registered to do.

How we work with a Philadelphia business

We work with Philadelphia businesses remotely from our US office in Los Angeles. Mavix has no Philadelphia office, no staff in Pennsylvania and no named clients there. No Philadelphia results appear here because we have none to report.

You are three hours ahead of us. Calls are set for your late morning or afternoon, and a written update goes out after each block of work. You keep ownership of your Search Console, analytics, ad account and Google Business Profile throughout.

It starts with a free review of your site, your towns and your current search terms. From that you get a plan and a quote. Read the method on the SEO page and the paid side on the Google Ads page. The SEO pricing page explains how fees are set.

What to check before hiring any agency in Philadelphia

  • Ask how they would handle the state lines. An ad that runs in New Jersey for a Pennsylvania-only contractor wastes money.
  • Ask whether they would use county names, town names or both in your pages, and why.
  • Ask, if you are a practice, how they would compete with a hospital system for the same search.
  • Ask to see the monthly report format, and check that it counts calls and booked appointments.
  • Ask that every login stays in your name from day one.
  • Ask where the team is located. If the answer is “local”, ask for the street address.

The New York page covers the larger market up the road, and you can see every city on the locations page.

Questions

Questions owners ask about this

01 Does Mavix have an office in Philadelphia?
No. Mavix has no office, no staff and no named clients in Philadelphia. Work for Philadelphia businesses is done remotely from our US office at 3435 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles.
02 How many businesses are in the Philadelphia metro area?
The Census Bureau counted 153,791 employer establishments in the Philadelphia, Camden and Wilmington metro area in 2023. Of those, 83,514 had fewer than five employees.
03 Should my site target Philadelphia, the suburbs or New Jersey?
Wherever you are allowed to work and willing to travel. The metro covers parts of four states, so a contractor or a professional practice should first confirm which states its license or registration covers.
04 Do contractors need a Philadelphia license?
The city requires a Contractor License for businesses doing construction, demolition or repair work. A business that only works on existing one or two family homes registers with the State as a home improvement contractor instead.
05 Why is health care marketing so competitive in Philadelphia?
Because the field is very large here. Hospitals in the metro employ 163,107 people in the Census file, and large health systems have marketing teams. An independent practice does better by picking specific treatments and neighborhoods.
06 How do calls work with a three hour time difference?
We book them in Eastern time, in your late morning or afternoon. Written updates arrive by email so you are not waiting on a call to know what was done.
