How much does a digital marketing agency cost in 2026? Retainers, hourly rates and percentage fees
What a digital marketing agency costs in 2026: retainers by service, hourly and project rates, percentage-of-spend fees, and how to compare quotes.
A digital marketing agency typically costs $1,000 to $20,000 a month on a retainer. That range comes from WebFX, a large US agency, which surveyed more than 250 US marketing and sales professionals for its 2026 pricing page (WebFX). The same page puts hourly rates at $25 to $250 or more and one-off projects at $3,000 to $30,000 or more.
A small business buying one or two services is likely to sit near the bottom of that range. Ahrefs surveyed 439 SEO providers and found the most common monthly retainer was $501 to $1,000 (Ahrefs). The sections below break the bill down by service and by pricing model.
The short version
- Agency retainers run from $1,000 to $20,000 a month, according to WebFX’s survey of more than 250 US marketing and sales professionals.
- SEO retainers average $3,209 a month at agencies in Ahrefs’ survey of 439 providers, last updated in August 2024. The most common bracket in that survey is $501 to $1,000.
- Paid ads management is typically 10 to 20 percent of ad spend or $1,000 to $3,000 a month, according to WebFX. Ad spend itself is a separate bill.
- Agency hourly rates for SEO, paid ads and email sit at $100 to $149 on Clutch, in a guide updated 21 September 2026.
- Three services from an agency add up to about $1,550 to $9,200 a month on published figures, before ad spend. That total is our arithmetic.

What do agency retainers cost by service?
A retainer is a fixed monthly fee for ongoing work. Published ranges for each service are wide, so the table gives two sources where two exist.
| Service | WebFX survey range, per month | A second published figure |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | $500 to $5,000 | $3,209 agency average, $501 to $1,000 most common bracket (Ahrefs, 439 providers) |
| Paid ads management | $1,500 to $15,000 | 10 to 20 percent of ad spend, or $1,000 to $3,000 (WebFX’s PPC page, 350 marketers) |
| Email marketing | $50 to $1,000 | $1,000 to $3,000 for smaller businesses (InboxArmy, updated 8 September 2026) |
| Social media marketing | $750 to $7,000 | No second source opened |
| Content marketing | $2,000 to $20,000 | No second source opened |
| Several services together | $1,000 to $10,000 or more | “Starting at $3,000/month” (WebFX’s own published price) |
Sources: the first column is from WebFX’s digital marketing pricing page. The second column is from Ahrefs, WebFX’s PPC pricing page and InboxArmy. WebFX does not state on the page when its survey ran.
The email row shows how far two sources can sit apart. WebFX’s survey range tops out at $1,000 a month. InboxArmy, an email agency, says retainers start at $1,000 to $3,000. Our post on what email marketing costs in 2026 sets out why.
SEO surveys disagree as well. SE Ranking and Duda surveyed 260 agencies, published in December 2024, and found 64 percent charge less than $1,000 a month (SE Ranking). In the Ahrefs survey, 79.1 percent of US and Canadian providers charge at least $1,001. Geography explains part of the gap. Our post on how much SEO costs goes through the surveys one at a time.
Clutch publishes the highest headline. Its guide says digital marketing pricing ranges between $5,000 and $50,000 a month, from data on more than 100,000 firms on its marketplace (Clutch). The projects reviewed on Clutch most often cost $10,000 to $49,999 in total. In our reading, those reviews lean toward larger engagements than a small business retainer.

What do agencies charge by the hour or by the project?
Hourly rates run from $25 to $250 or more, and projects from $3,000 to $30,000 or more, on WebFX’s survey page. Other sources narrow that down.
| Source | Hourly rate | Project fee |
|---|---|---|
| WebFX survey, 250+ US professionals | $25 to $250 or more | $3,000 to $30,000 or more |
| Clutch, updated 21 September 2026 | $100 to $149 for SEO, PPC, email, content and social | $10,000 to $49,999 for most reviewed projects |
| Ahrefs, 439 SEO providers | $98.90 agency average. $75 to $100 most common | $2,501 to $5,000 most common |
| SE Ranking, 260 agencies | $50 to $100 at 45 percent of agencies | $500 to $2,000 at about 65 percent |
| Upwork, freelancers worldwide | $15 to $45 | Not published |
Two notes on the table. WebFX’s page gives the hourly range as $25 to $250 in one place and $50 to $250 in another. Clutch says agencies across its whole directory most often list $25 to $49 an hour, while the named services sit at $100 to $149.
Hourly billing suits a bounded job: an audit, a tracking fix, a one-time account rebuild. A retainer suits work that repeats each month. The hourly rate is still useful when you are offered a retainer. At the $98.90 agency average in the Ahrefs survey, a $1,000 retainer buys about ten hours a month. That division is ours.
How do percentage-of-spend fees work?
The agency charges a share of what you spend on ads, often with a minimum. WebFX says management fees are typically 10 to 20 percent of ad spend (WebFX).
One large agency publishes its own tiers, which makes the arithmetic easy to follow. WebFX lists a Lite plan at $750 a month for ad spend of $100 to $5,000. Its Pro plan is $975 or 15 percent of spend, whichever is higher, for spend of $5,000 to $30,000. Its Enterprise plan is $4,500 or 12 percent for spend above $30,000.
| Monthly ad spend | Fee on those published tiers | Fee as a share of spend |
|---|---|---|
| $3,000 | $750 flat | 25 percent |
| $5,000 | $975 minimum | 19.5 percent |
| $10,000 | $1,500 at 15 percent | 15 percent |
| $40,000 | $4,800 at 12 percent | 12 percent |
The right-hand column is our arithmetic on WebFX’s published plans. It shows the pattern that matters for a small account. A minimum fee makes the percentage higher at low spend, and the percentage falls as spend grows.
The ad spend goes to Google or Meta and is not part of the fee. Clutch’s guide says the same: advertising costs are not included in agency fees and need a separate budget. The same WebFX plans charge $1,200 for the first month on Lite and $2,250 on Pro, which includes a campaign audit.
A percentage fee rewards the agency when spend rises. That is a reason to ask how the agency decides to raise a budget. Our Google Ads management page describes how we handle that, and the ads pricing page explains what a quote covers.
What does a small business typically pay in total?
On published figures, three services from an agency cost about $1,550 to $9,200 a month before ad spend. The table shows where that comes from.
| Service | Lower published figure | Higher published figure |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | $501, the bottom of the most common Ahrefs bracket | $3,209, the Ahrefs agency average |
| Paid ads management | $750, WebFX’s Lite plan | $3,000, the top of WebFX’s typical flat range |
| $300, WebFX’s published starting price | $3,000, the top of InboxArmy’s small business range | |
| Total per month | $1,551 | $9,209 |
The totals are our arithmetic and not a survey result. They line up with WebFX’s survey, which puts several services together at $1,000 to $10,000 or more a month.
Many small businesses plan to spend far less than any of this. UENI, a website builder, counted the planned marketing budgets of 7,413 US businesses that signed up to its platform, as of 10 August 2026. It found 64.3 percent planned to spend $1 to $200 a month and 26.1 percent planned to spend nothing. Only 3.8 percent planned $500 or more (UENI). UENI notes these are plans and not receipts, and its sample leans toward very small businesses.
Those two facts sit side by side. Agency retainers start around the level where only a few percent of the businesses in that sample plan to spend. If your budget is under $500 a month, we think one hourly project is a better fit than a retainer. Our marketing budget calculator works out a monthly figure from your revenue and margin.
One service done properly often beats three done thinly, in our experience. The SEO pricing page, the ads pricing page and the email pricing page explain what moves each quote. Mavix quotes after a free review.

How do you compare agency quotes?
Put every quote on the same basis before you compare the totals. These five checks are our own practice, not an industry standard.
- Separate fees from ad spend. A $2,000 quote that includes $1,000 of ad spend is a $1,000 fee.
- Work out the hours. Divide the monthly fee by the agency’s hourly rate, or ask how many hours the fee buys.
- List the deliverables. Pages written, campaigns managed, emails sent and reports delivered each month.
- Find the minimums. A percentage fee with a minimum costs more at low spend, as the table above shows.
- Check the first-month charge and the contract length. Setup fees and a minimum term change the first-year total.
Then check who owns the accounts and the data when the contract ends. Our list of 20 questions to ask a marketing agency covers ownership, reporting and exit terms.
An agency is one of three routes. The comparison of an agency, a freelancer and an in-house hire puts all three on the same monthly basis. The SEO service page shows what a scoped engagement looks like with us.
The bottom line
An agency’s price is hours multiplied by a rate, packaged as a retainer, a project or a percentage. Published ranges are wide because the packages differ. Turn each quote back into hours, deliverables and fees, set ad spend to one side, and the comparison becomes simple.
Questions people ask about this
How much does a digital marketing agency cost per month?
WebFX’s survey of more than 250 US marketing and sales professionals puts agency retainers at $1,000 to $20,000 a month. A small business buying one service is likely to sit lower. In Ahrefs’ survey of 439 SEO providers, the most common monthly retainer was $501 to $1,000, and the agency average was $3,209.
What percentage of ad spend do agencies charge?
WebFX says management fees are typically 10 to 20 percent of ad spend. Its own published plans charge 15 percent on spend of $5,000 to $30,000 and 12 percent above that, each with a monthly minimum. At low spend the minimum applies, so the fee is a larger share of the budget.
Is ad spend included in an agency’s fee?
No, in the published guides we read. Clutch’s 2026 pricing guide says advertising costs are not included in agency fees and need to be budgeted separately. WebFX’s plans describe ad spend as paid to the networks. Ask for the fee and the ad budget as two separate lines on any quote.
How much do digital marketing agencies charge per hour?
Clutch’s guide, updated 21 September 2026, puts SEO, PPC, email, content and social media work at $100 to $149 an hour. Ahrefs’ survey of SEO providers found an agency average of $98.90. Freelance digital marketers on Upwork typically charge $15 to $45 an hour, based on contracts worldwide.
What is the cheapest way to hire marketing help?
An hourly freelancer has the lowest published rates. Upwork lists digital marketers at $15 to $45 an hour worldwide. A one-off project is the next step up. SE Ranking found about 65 percent of the agencies it surveyed charge $500 to $2,000 for an SEO project. Low cost and good value are separate questions.
Why do published agency prices vary so much?
The sources measure different things. WebFX surveyed buyers. Ahrefs and SE Ranking surveyed providers. Clutch reports projects reviewed on its own marketplace, where the most common total is $10,000 to $49,999. Scope differs too. A retainer for one service and a retainer for five are both called agency pricing.
How much should a small business budget for an agency?
On published figures, SEO, ads management and email together cost about $1,550 to $9,200 a month before ad spend. That total is our arithmetic on prices from Ahrefs, WebFX and InboxArmy. In our view, a business with under $500 a month to spend is better served by a single hourly project than a retainer.
What does Mavix charge?
Mavix does not publish a price list. Mavix quotes after a free review of your site, your ad account and your email setup. The quote depends on which of the three services you need, the state each one starts in and how much work each month the goal requires.
