Los Angeles, CA

SEO and paid search for Los Angeles businesses, from an office on Wilshire

You are one of more than 400,000 employer locations in the Los Angeles metro, and a customer in Pasadena does not search the way a customer in Torrance does. This page sets out how big the market is, how crowded your trade is, what California asks of your marketing, and how we work from our Los Angeles office.

How big the Los Angeles search market is

The city of Los Angeles had 3,869,089 residents on 1 July 2025, according to the Census Bureau’s city and town estimates. The metro area, which is Los Angeles County and Orange County together, had 12,844,441 on the same date (Census Bureau, metro area estimates).

On the business side, the Census Bureau counted 411,949 employer establishments in the metro in 2023 (County Business Patterns). An establishment is one physical location with paid staff. Of those, 257,746 had fewer than five employees. If you run a small shop, a practice or a crew, that is the group you compete with for a customer’s first click.

We explain what these counts do and do not tell you in our post on US business counts by market.

The places people type: two counties, separate cities and the Valley

Los Angeles is hard to treat as one place. The metro covers two counties, and a customer’s idea of “near me” is shaped by freeways and drive time. Someone in Santa Monica is unlikely to book a dentist in Glendale, even though both sit inside the same metro figure.

So the searches split by place name. People add Santa Monica, Pasadena, Glendale, Burbank, Long Beach and Torrance, which are separate cities with their own results. Inside the city of Los Angeles they add districts: Koreatown, Silver Lake, Sherman Oaks, Encino, Venice, Downtown. South of the county line they add Anaheim, Irvine and Santa Ana.

For a business with one address, Google’s map results lean on where the searcher is standing. A Burbank roofer will rarely appear for a search made in Long Beach, whatever the website says. Our local SEO work starts by listing the places you can honestly serve and checking who ranks in each.

How crowded each trade is in the Los Angeles metro

These are counts of employer locations from the Census Bureau, by trade, for the whole two-county metro. They show how many others are after the same customer.

Trade (Census category)Employer locations, 2023Paid employees
Restaurants and other eating places29,168518,233
Offices of physicians14,79590,503
Legal services11,91379,546
Offices of dentists9,29650,762
Offices of real estate agents and brokers8,93119,620
Motion picture and sound recording8,672125,824
Plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors3,79339,381
Apparel manufacturing1,39116,104

Every row is from the metropolitan area file of County Business Patterns: 2023. Firms with no employees are not in it, so the real number of competitors is higher in trades with many one-person operators.

Two rows are particular to this city. Motion picture and sound recording employs 125,824 people here, more than four times the figure for the New York metro in the same file. Apparel manufacturing has 1,391 locations, against 662 in the New York metro. If you make or sell clothing online from here, our ecommerce and retail page is the closer fit.

Why competing in Los Angeles costs what it does

Three things push the cost up here, and all three can be checked.

The first is headcount. The metro has 11,913 legal services locations. A law firm bidding on a personal injury search here is in an auction with far more bidders than it would face in a mid-sized city.

The second is wages. The average weekly wage in the Los Angeles metro was $1,721 in the first quarter of 2026, against $1,654 nationally (BLS, Los Angeles Area Economic Summary). Your competitors charge more per job, so they can afford to pay more per lead.

The third is geography, and this one works in your favor. Because searches split by neighborhood and city, a business that picks four or five areas and builds real pages for them competes with a few dozen firms. That is our view from the counts above, and it is the reason we rarely advise a new site to chase the phrase “Los Angeles” first.

California rules that reach your marketing

Two state rules matter for a Los Angeles business that advertises.

Contractor licensing. From 1 January 2025 the minor work exemption rose from $500 to $1,000 (Contractors State License Board bulletin). It does not apply if the job needs a permit or the person uses any workers. The same bulletin says an unlicensed person may advertise that minor work only if the ad states they are not licensed. If you hold a license, your number in your ads and on your site is one of the few things an unlicensed competitor cannot copy.

Privacy. The California Consumer Privacy Act applies to for-profit businesses that pass any one of three thresholds, the first being gross annual revenue over $25 million (California Attorney General). A single-location business with revenue under that figure, and no trade in personal data, sits below all three. We are not lawyers, so we flag where your tracking and forms collect personal information and leave the legal reading to your counsel.

How we work with a Los Angeles business

Our US office is at 3435 Wilshire Blvd, 14th Floor, Los Angeles, CA 90010. It is the only Mavix office in the United States, and you are welcome to meet us there. The day-to-day work still happens in shared documents, your Google accounts and scheduled calls, the same as it would with a client anywhere else.

We have no published Los Angeles case study, so this page quotes no local results and names no local clients. What you get first is a free review: your site, the search terms you appear for, and the areas where you are missing. You can start that yourself with the website audit tool.

After the review we send a written plan and a quote. Search work is described on the SEO page and paid search on the Google Ads page.

What to check before you hire any agency in Los Angeles

  • Ask which neighborhoods and cities they would target for you, and why those. “Los Angeles” on its own is a weak answer for a business with one address.
  • Ask who owns the Google Ads account, the Google Business Profile and the analytics. It should be you, in writing.
  • Ask to see a report from a current client with the business name removed. Look for calls, forms and booked jobs in it.
  • Ask whether they have an office here. If they say yes, ask for the address and whether you can visit.
  • If you are a contractor, ask how they handle your license number in ads and on the site.
  • Ask what they would stop doing in your account in the first month. A plan that only adds things has not looked closely.

If you want to compare cities, the New York page uses the same Census file, and every city we cover is on the locations page.

Questions

Questions owners ask about this

01 Does Mavix have an office in Los Angeles?
Yes. The Mavix US office is at 3435 Wilshire Blvd, 14th Floor, Los Angeles, CA 90010. It is the only Mavix office in the United States.
02 How many businesses compete for search in Los Angeles?
The Census Bureau counted 411,949 employer establishments in the Los Angeles, Long Beach and Anaheim metro area in 2023. The number that matters to you is the count in your own trade, which is in the table on this page.
03 Should my page target Los Angeles or my own neighborhood?
Start with the area you can actually serve. A search for a plumber in Sherman Oaks and one in Long Beach return different businesses. A page that names only the whole city has to compete in every one of those places at once.
04 Do California contractor rules affect my ads?
Yes. The Contractors State License Board says an unlicensed person may only advertise minor work under 1,000 dollars and must say in the ad that they are not licensed. Licensed contractors should check their own advertising rules with the board.
05 Does the California privacy law apply to a small business?
It depends on size. The California Attorney General lists three thresholds, including gross annual revenue over 25 million dollars. A business below all three is not covered, though its ad platforms and vendors may be.
06 What does Mavix charge a Los Angeles business?
We quote after a free review of your site, your search terms and your ad account. The cost depends on how crowded your trade is in the areas you serve, and that is different for each business.
