New York, NY

SEO and paid search for New York businesses, borough by borough

The New York metro has more employer locations than any other in the country, and your customer is choosing between the handful of businesses within a few subway stops or a short drive. This page covers how the market splits by borough and suburb, how crowded your trade is, and how we work with a New York business from Los Angeles.

The largest business market in the country, in numbers

New York City had 8,584,629 residents on 1 July 2025 (Census Bureau, city and town estimates). The metro area, which runs across the Hudson into northern New Jersey and out along Long Island, had 20,112,448 (Census Bureau, metro area estimates).

The Census Bureau counted 562,802 employer establishments in that metro in 2023, the highest of the six metros we have pages for (County Business Patterns). Chicago, the next city on our list, had 248,519. We set the two side by side in our post on US business counts by market.

A count like that says the demand is there. It says nothing about which block of it you can reach, and in New York that depends on where you are.

A New Yorker searching for a dentist or a locksmith rarely means the whole city. The borough comes first: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island. Then the neighborhood, because a thirty-minute train ride is a real barrier. Astoria, Flushing, Park Slope, Williamsburg, Bay Ridge, Harlem and the Upper West Side each behave like a small town in the map results.

Outside the city the pattern changes to county and town names. On Long Island people search by Nassau or Suffolk, or by town. North of the Bronx it is Westchester, Yonkers and White Plains. Across the river it is Jersey City, Hoboken and Newark, which sit in a different state with different licensing.

If you serve customers at their home, write down the zip codes you will travel to before any page is built. Our local SEO service uses that list to decide which pages are worth writing.

How crowded each trade is in the New York metro

Trade (Census category)Employer locations, 2023Paid employees
Restaurants and other eating places45,519583,736
Offices of physicians16,282164,060
Legal services13,638128,425
Offices of dentists9,58262,116
Securities, commodities and other financial investments8,107219,209
Plumbing, heating and air-conditioning contractors7,64064,994
Offices of real estate agents and brokers6,94424,628

All rows are from the metropolitan area file of County Business Patterns: 2023. They cover the whole metro, New Jersey included, and leave out firms with no paid staff.

The row that sets New York apart is securities and investments, with 219,209 employees. Finance shapes what gets searched here, from wealth managers to the accountants and lawyers who serve them. If you are in that group, read our page on financial services marketing, because the advertising rules for regulated firms change what a page can claim.

Restaurants are the other outlier. There are 45,519 eating places with staff in the metro, and 19,524 of them have fewer than five employees.

What makes New York expensive to compete in

Wages are the plainest reason. The average weekly wage in the New York area was $2,505 in the first quarter of 2026, against $1,654 for the United States (BLS, New York Area Economic Summary). First-quarter figures include bonuses, so read it as a high-water mark. Even so, a business whose customers earn more can charge more, and can pay more for a lead.

The same BLS summary shows 842,700 jobs in financial activities and 2,334,400 in education and health services in July 2026. Those are the two fields where a single new client is worth the most, and where we would expect the paid search auctions to be dearest. That last part is our reading, since BLS does not measure ad prices.

What keeps it workable is density. A dental practice in Park Slope is competing with the practices a patient can walk to. Those are a small slice of the 9,582 dental offices in the metro. A narrow target is cheaper to win and easier to measure.

New York rules that touch your marketing

Home improvement. New York City requires a Home Improvement Contractor license for anyone doing construction, repair or remodeling on residential property in the city (NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection). That license is a city one. It does not cover Nassau, Westchester or New Jersey, so a contractor advertising across the metro needs to check each place.

Data. The SHIELD Act applies to any person or business that holds private information of New York residents, and it requires safeguards and breach notices (New York Attorney General). An email list with login details falls inside it. We are not lawyers. We point out where your forms and tools hold that kind of data, and your counsel decides what is needed.

How we work with a New York business

We work with New York businesses remotely from our US office in Los Angeles. Mavix has no office in New York, no staff there and no named New York clients. This page quotes no local results because we have none approved to publish.

In practice the distance changes one thing: we cannot walk your street. So in the first week we ask you for what a local would know. Which neighborhoods send good customers, which ones waste a trip, and which competitors you lose to. The rest is the same anywhere: access to your own Google accounts, a written plan and calls booked in Eastern time.

You can see how we approach search on the SEO page and get a rough sense of return with the SEO ROI calculator. We quote after a free review of your site and accounts.

What to check before hiring any agency in New York

  • Ask where their staff are, and whether the New York address on the site is a staffed office you can visit.
  • Ask which boroughs and neighborhoods they would target, and what they would leave out.
  • Ask how they separate New York from New Jersey in your ads if you are licensed in only one state.
  • Ask who owns the ad account and the Google Business Profile. Your name should be on both.
  • Ask for one report where calls and booked appointments are counted, with the client name removed.
  • Ask what a month costs to exit. A long lock-in is a cost even if the monthly fee looks low.

The Chicago page runs the same comparison for the Midwest, and the full list is on the locations page.

Questions

Questions owners ask about this

01 Does Mavix have an office in New York?
No. Mavix has no office, no staff and no named clients in New York. The work is done remotely from our US office at 3435 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles.
02 How many businesses are in the New York metro area?
The Census Bureau counted 562,802 employer establishments in the New York, Newark and Jersey City metro area in 2023. Of those, 348,908 had fewer than five employees.
03 Should I target New York City or my borough?
Your borough and neighborhood first, if customers come to you or you travel to them. A search made in Astoria and one made in Bay Ridge show different map results, so the city name alone is a hard and vague target.
04 Do home improvement contractors need a license to advertise in New York City?
The city requires a Home Improvement Contractor license for construction, repair or remodeling work on residential property in New York City. Check the current rules on advertising with the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection.
05 Is there a New York privacy law I need to know about?
The SHIELD Act requires any person or business that holds private information of New York residents to keep reasonable safeguards and to notify people after a breach. It covers email addresses held with passwords.
06 How does a remote agency handle a New York business?
Through access to your own accounts, a shared plan and scheduled calls in Eastern time. We do not visit in person, and we say so before you sign anything.
