Regulated industry

Dispensary marketing for a market with no paid search

Google and Meta will not run your ads. That sounds like a disadvantage until you notice it applies to every dispensary within twenty miles of you, and almost none of them have done the organic work. Most dispensary budget goes to Weedmaps and Leafly because those are the only channels anyone has shown the operator. Your own site could rank for the searches those platforms rank for.

Marketing does not behave the same way here.

This is the only industry worked in here where the two largest advertising platforms are simply unavailable. Google Ads prohibits marijuana promotion, Meta prohibits it, and no amount of clever campaign structure changes that. What is left is local search, the listing platforms, and whatever direct relationship you can build with a customer once they have visited.

The distortion that creates is enormous and mostly unexploited. Because paid search is off the table, ranking is not competed for by budget. It is competed for by whoever bothered. In most markets that means a handful of dispensaries with a barely configured Google Business Profile, a menu embedded in an iframe that search engines cannot read, and a site that has never ranked for anything except its own name. Meanwhile the operator pays a listing platform a monthly fee to occupy the position their own site could hold.

Add a set of constraints nobody else deals with: age gates that block crawlers if implemented carelessly, state advertising rules that vary line by line, and email providers that name cannabis in their prohibited use policies. The businesses that win here are the ones who treated the constraints as the strategy.

How your customers actually search.

Near me, on a phone, about to drive

Dispensary near me, open now, delivery. This is the highest-value search in the category and it is decided almost entirely by the map pack, which is won through the Business Profile and local signals rather than through the website.

Product and strain specific

A strain name, a category, a potency range, often plus the city. Menu pages that search engines can read will rank for these. Menu pages inside an iframe will not, and most are.

First-time and legality questions

What do I need to bring, do I need a card, what are the limits, is it legal here. High volume, almost no competition, and the person asking is close to a first visit.

Deals and drops

Daily deals, happy hour, new drops. Habitual and repeat, and better served by email and SMS than by search, because the customer already knows who you are.

How an enquiry becomes a customer.

Different intents take different routes. Serving all of them with one page is the most common structural mistake in this industry.

  • Map pack result, then a menu check, then a drive. The website is often visited for under a minute and its only job is to confirm hours, location and stock.
  • The first visit is the moment the relationship is won or lost, and it is the only reliable chance to capture a contact detail for a channel nobody can switch off.
  • Repeat business runs on email and SMS rather than search, because a regular customer does not search for you again.
  • Listing platforms convert well and rent you the position. Every month they rank and you do not is a month the fee gets harder to stop paying.

Search

What goes wrong in search

SEO in detail
  • Menu loaded in a third-party iframe, so none of the product or strain content exists as far as search is concerned. This is the single most common and most expensive mistake in the category.
  • Age gate implemented as a hard block or a redirect, which stops crawlers reaching the site at all. A cookie-based gate that lets the page render solves it.
  • Google Business Profile filled in once at opening and never touched since, when it is the asset that decides the map pack.
  • No location pages for surrounding towns, so the entire catchment outside the immediate city is invisible.
  • Nothing written for first-time visitor questions, which is free ground nobody is competing for.

Paid

Where paid search wins here

Google Ads in detail
  • Google Ads and Meta are closed for marijuana, and any agency proposing them is either uninformed or planning to spend your money finding out.
  • Listing platform placement still works, and is worth buying deliberately with a defined ceiling rather than by default and forever.
  • Programmatic networks that accept the category exist and can be geo-fenced to your legal service area, which suits a business with a physical catchment.
  • Local sponsorship and events reach the same catchment as a geo-fenced campaign, and the spend is not subject to a platform policy review.

Email

What email is for in this industry

Email automation in detail
  • A provider that accepts cannabis in writing before anything is migrated, because losing a list of regulars is losing the business.
  • Drop and restock alerts segmented by what a customer actually buys, which is the highest-performing message in the category.
  • First-visit follow-up that turns one transaction into a habit, which is where the margin sits when new customers are this hard to reach.
  • SMS where state rules permit it and consent is properly captured, since foot traffic responds to it faster than to email.

What the report should lead with.

  • Map pack ranking for the core city and each surrounding town
  • Direction requests and calls from the Business Profile
  • Organic sessions to menu pages, which requires the menu to be crawlable in the first place
  • Share of repeat customers and visit frequency
  • Revenue per email and SMS recipient
  • Listing platform spend as a share of total marketing cost, tracked so it can fall

Questions

Questions from this industry.

01 Can a dispensary advertise on Google or Facebook at all?
No. Both prohibit marijuana promotion regardless of state licensing, and there is no certification route that opens it the way there is for some other regulated categories. Anyone offering to run these campaigns for you is proposing to spend your money on accounts that will be disabled.
02 We spend a lot on Weedmaps and Leafly. Should we stop?
Not abruptly, and not before something replaces the traffic. What is worth changing is the assumption that it is permanent. Those platforms rank for searches your own site could rank for, and every month you do not compete for them the fee becomes harder to stop paying. Treat it as paid traffic with a ceiling rather than as a fixed cost.
03 Does a dispensary age gate hurt SEO?
It can, badly, and it usually does. A gate that hard-blocks or redirects before the page renders stops crawlers seeing anything. A cookie-based overlay that leaves the underlying page in the HTML satisfies the requirement without making the site invisible. This is one of the first things checked.
04 Our dispensary menu is a widget from our POS. Is that a problem?
Yes, and it is usually the biggest one. If the menu loads in an iframe, none of that product content exists for search, so you cannot rank for a single strain or category name. There are usually options: a crawlable menu page generated from the same data, or category pages that carry real content alongside the widget.
05 Is SEO fast enough to matter for a dispensary?
Local search moves faster than national search, and Business Profile work in particular can shift the map pack inside weeks. The site content takes longer. What makes it worth starting is that the competitive field is thin, because everyone else in your city is also locked out of paid and most of them have done nothing about it.
