San Diego, CA

SEO and paid search for San Diego businesses in a crowded, single-county market

The county is not growing and there are more employers per resident here than in Dallas, Austin or San Antonio. New customers have to be won from a competitor, one search at a time.

One county, 3.28 million people, and no growth to share

San Diego had 1,406,106 residents on July 1, 2025, the eighth largest city in the country (Census Bureau). San Diego County, which is the whole metro, had 3,282,248 (Census Bureau). The year before it had 3,287,542, on the bureau’s metro estimates. The county lost about 5,300 people.

That changes how you plan. In a metro that adds 50,000 people a year, a new firm can grow on newcomers alone. Here the number of households is flat. A booking you gain is one a competitor did not get.

And there are plenty of competitors. The Census Bureau counted 93,407 employer establishments in the metro in 2023, with 1,391,721 paid employees (County Business Patterns). Of those, 54,898 had fewer than five employees.

The places San Diego searchers name

City searches carry a neighbourhood: La Jolla, Pacific Beach, North Park, Hillcrest, Mission Valley, Point Loma, Carmel Valley and Rancho Bernardo. County searches split three ways. North County means Oceanside, Carlsbad, Encinitas, Escondido and San Marcos. East County means El Cajon and La Mesa. South Bay means Chula Vista and National City.

Geography shapes local results here more than in an inland city. Google ranks local businesses partly by distance from the person searching (Google Business Profile Help). The ocean is to the west and the border is to the south. An address in Pacific Beach or Chula Vista has customers on one side only. If you can choose where to register a service business, an inland address near Interstate 15 or 805 reaches more homes. That is our reading of the map, and you should test it against your own calls.

Health, research and visitors drive the work

The metro had 1,564,100 nonfarm jobs in July 2026 (Bureau of Labor Statistics). Education and health services was the largest group at 284,300, and it added 13,900 jobs in a year. Professional and business services employed 263,500. Government employed 238,500. Leisure and hospitality employed 212,500 and manufacturing 110,200.

For a clinic, a dental group or a therapy practice, that means a busy field. Our healthcare marketing and med spa marketing pages cover what those practices can and cannot say in an ad. For firms that build and repair, see general contractor marketing. Construction jobs fell 3.2 percent in the year on the same summary, so fewer projects are being shared among the same firms.

What makes San Diego an expensive place to compete

The plain measure is density. San Diego has about 28.5 employer establishments per 1,000 residents, on our arithmetic from the Census figures. Dallas-Fort Worth has about 23. With more firms for each household and no new households arriving, bids rise.

Pay is the second reason. The average weekly wage in the metro was $1,814 in early 2026, against $1,654 nationally, on the BLS summary. A customer here is worth more to win.

We know of no published click price for San Diego alone. As a reference, the 2026 national benchmark puts dental searches at $8.00 a click and $72.97 a lead, and physicians at $4.76 a click (LocaliQ). Set Keyword Planner to San Diego County to see your own.

What costs less is reach. The whole metro is one county, so one campaign area and one set of local pages covers it.

California rules that change your ads and your site

California licenses contractors through the Contractors State License Board. Anyone who contracts for work valued at $1,000 or more in combined labor and materials must hold a current licence (CSLB). The licence number must appear in all forms of advertising (Business and Professions Code 7030.5). Put it in the site footer, the Google Business Profile and the ad copy.

Privacy law is stricter here than in other states we write about. The California Consumer Privacy Act applies to a for-profit business with gross annual revenue over $25 million. It also applies to one that buys, sells or shares the personal information of 100,000 or more California residents or households (California Attorney General). A local trade is unlikely to reach either test. An online store with a large email list might, so count before you add ad tracking.

How we work with a San Diego business

Our US office is in Los Angeles, in the same state and roughly two hours up the coast. That is not a San Diego office. We have no premises, no staff and no named clients in San Diego, and we do the work remotely.

You begin by sending the site. The free review comes back in writing: the searches you appear for, the pages that are missing, and whether calls and forms are counted. If you want a first look yourself, run the website audit tool.

Paid work is SEO and local SEO, judged against a baseline from your own Search Console. Accounts stay in your name. We serve Miami and the other cities on the locations page the same way.

What to check before hiring an agency in San Diego

  • Ask whether they would build one San Diego page or separate pages for North County, East County and South Bay, and what decides it.
  • If you are a contractor, check that their sample ads carry a licence number.
  • Ask which privacy tests they checked before installing tracking on a client site.
  • Ask to see results for a business with a coastal address, since half its radius is water.
  • Ask for the price in writing with the scope. The page on how SEO pricing is set shows what should be in it.

Questions

Questions owners ask about this

01 Is Mavix based in San Diego?
No. Our US office is in Los Angeles, about two hours north. We have no office, staff or named clients in San Diego, and the work is done remotely.
02 How many businesses compete in San Diego?
The Census Bureau counted 93,407 employer establishments in the San Diego metro in 2023. Of those, 54,898 had fewer than five employees.
03 Do California contractors have to show a licence number in ads?
Yes. California Business and Professions Code section 7030.5 requires licensed contractors to include the licence number in all forms of advertising. That covers a website, a Google Business Profile and paid ads.
04 Does the CCPA apply to my San Diego business?
It applies to for-profit businesses that meet one of three tests set out by the California Attorney General. One is gross annual revenue over $25 million. Another is handling the personal information of 100,000 or more California residents or households.
05 Should I target North County separately?
If you take jobs there, yes. Oceanside, Carlsbad and Escondido each have more than 100,000 residents and their own results. A coastal address in the city is a long way from all three.
06 What will Mavix quote for San Diego SEO?
We give no figure until we have read the site. After the free review you get a price in writing with the scope it covers.
